Once again, the state of South Carolina has been declared in a state of emergency. That is three years in a row! Something about this storm seems different though... more serious.
Irma is the name of the category five hurricane that will hit a greater portion of the southern United States. The islands off of the coast, Florida and states up the side of the East Coast are said to be hit the worst. Cities are being mandatory evacuated. So what do you do as a resident of one of these states? PREPARE FOR THE WORST BUT DO NOT PANIC.
Fill your gas tanks, grab cases of water, buy food you can eat without need of electricity, stock up on batteries, charge phones laptops (if you're obsessed like me, your portable charger that goes EVERYWHERE with you).
Students on the University of South Carolina's campus are panicking believe it or not. This is the third year in a row that a dangerous storm has been tracked to hit our area. If you are an upperclassmen, this is nothing new to you. If you are a freshman, there are things you can do to prepare for what may be one of the worst storms Columbia has seen in years.
1. The city will flood.
If you have a car, move it to higher level. Columbia is a very hilly city, and water runs downed floods the areas that lower. Rain boots and a rain jacket are necessities...I learned that the hard way last year.
2. Classes may be cancelled.
Do not abuse this time. This is a time to help others in need and catch up on work.
3. Power may go out and elevators could stop.
Wherever you live, there is always a chance of a power outage. BE CAREFUL. Getting stuck in the elevator is not fun and could be extremely dangerous.
Follow the list of tips above, think of others, hope for the best, and stay safe. I am thinking about all of my pals and family members in Florida.
