With a potential government shutdown narrowly averted with a lease on time, the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s presidency seem to be rather disastrous. Here, we take a quick look.
What happened?
A series of promises along with the adamant push in terms of the series of changes that would supposedly happen within the first 100 days were at the forefront of Donald Trump’s campaigns. With a slew of emotionally targeted and inspired ideals proposed by the soon-to-be president, emotions were running high with the rising support for Donald Trump. However, after the first 100 days, the results are much different.
The first 100 days have virtually seen a catastrophic failure from the presidency, with exactly 0 major notable changes being passed in Congress in terms of the major promises. The political campaign pre-election rode on the emotional hype of appealing to emotionally volatile concepts such as a ban on Muslims entering the United States, as well as building a wall and having Mexico pay for it.
Currently, the attempted passing of the Muslim ban in both phases that it has been attempted have been blocked by federal courts, preventing it from coming to pass. The attempted forced payment of the enhanced border wall, despite however impractical and logically as well as empirically ineffective it may be, was rejected by Mexico, resulting in Donald Trump having to generate tax cuts in order to make that a reality. His attempted combating of Obamacare through the proposition of the American Health Care Act was proclaimed dead on arrival, with a resounding “NO!” being the commonplace reaction towards it from the Senate majority.
Despite the overwhelming negative remarks about his presidency in the first 100 days, however, Donald Trump has not wavered and instead has lashed out at his favorite scapegoat, the media, yet again to find a solution to his issues. Referring to the judgment of the 100 days as excessively arbitrary as well as pointing fingers at the media for bastardizing his work over the first 100 days, Trump seems to have yet again turned a blind eye to all criticism.
What does this mean?
Politicians not keeping their promises is nothing new to the spectrum of politics. But, such emotionally charged rhetoric that is embedded and sequestered within the politics being proposed can exhibit their own slew of issues, as the reactions are much more notable.
Emotional agendas carry a larger weight in terms of promises being made, as the betrayal of such things have much more of an impact. The majority of Trump’s policies ride an emotional high to appeal to structural inequities in security in the minds of Americans, leading to the overwhelming support that he has received. The Muslim ban and border wall are two of the key catchphrases that incited the emotional appeal. The support, while overwhelming, carries that very risk.
Trump’s failure to deliver on all of his promises isn’t unexpected. To deliver on none of them, however, is not only a testament to the antagonistic nature of his political perspective, but also provides a crucial view on how effectively polarizing influential speech in the political space can be. America is notably divided, and the failure of President Trump’s policies, as well as his rejection of criticism alongside his adamant, deluded belief that he has done well speaks volumes to the matter.
America is indeed divided, and the first 100 days are a significant marker of how damaged and divided the country has become.
