The playoff hopeful Islanders gained a point in an overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The point tied the Islanders for 8th place in the Eastern Conference Wild Card. The other two competing teams are the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Travis Hamonic and John Tavares scored for the Islanders, who dropped their fourth game in five contests.
Hamonic opened the scoring at 14:18 in the first period. Oliver Bjorkstrand scored a minute into the second period, after a turnover by Islanders d-man Dennis Seidenberg, to tie the game. Josh Anderson netted a one-timer from Brandon Dubinsky to give Columbus the lead.
“Aside from two or three shifts, those were the worst two periods I’ve seen this team play in over two years,” Islanders head coach Doug Weight said. “We just weren’t good,” Weight said.
The Islanders ceased control of the game in the third, and John Tavares scored the game-tying goal at 8:48 in the third period. That was enough to force overtime.
The game winning goal came from two defensive turnovers in the neutral zone. The Blue Jackets worked the puck behind the net before Dubinsky was able to find Cam Atkinson in front of the net.
“Dubinsky chose the harder route to go behind the net and (found) me to make a great play,” Atkinson told ESPN.
The Blue Jackets are now second in the Eastern Conference, two points behind the Washington Capitals who clinched a playoff berth earlier on Saturday.
The Islanders still sit at 9th in the conference, one point behind Toronto, and one point above Tampa Bay.
The Blue Jackets will verse The New Jersey Devils on Sunday, while the Islanders have off until Wednesday, where they will face off against the Rangers.
