Has anyone seen the video where Texan journalist Alexis Bloomer rants about millennials? If you missed it, here it is! Just a forewarning this video contains Millennial bashing. Bloomer confidently states, "As a Millennial I took upon myself to evaluate what's so wrong with our generation and why they're so mad at us." Bloomer then criticizes millennials for lacking respect and being entitled. Furthermore, she believes that the internet, activism, slang and music aids the generation in being despicable.
Well, it seems as if there is a lot of animosity towards millennials!
If you are unaware of the ridicule directed towards millennials, look for it on Facebook. If someone isn't blatantly mocking "the new generation" on your timeline you can definitely search the word millennial and thousand of results will appear.
Are we as horrible and unmotivated as society depicts us to be?
According to Forbes, millennials possess superior work ethic and are the best workers. They also reported that we are great communicators because social media has been so ingrained in our daily lives. Forbes believes that other generations are less avid to learn about new social media; however, millennials are quick to grasp these same things. Debunking the myth that we expect too much, Forbes believes we have huge aspirations because millennials witnessed people such as Obama and Mark Zuckerberg rise to success. Lastly, Forbes says that we are a very diverse group, this is what drives the opposing views millennials have.
It seems a majority of the millennial bashing stems from older generations who reject change. The same people who are unwilling to accept change also disregard mental health problem millennials have. The National Institue of Mental Health reported in 2014 that 20.1 percent of 18-24 year olds were diagnosed with some sort of mental illness in the U.S.
Is there a link between millennials being looked down upon and their mental health? If there is, millennials aren't waiting for their antagonizers to rescue them from the rubble. Across college campuses and elsewhere mental health awareness has been something that millennials pride themselves on.
It's astounding to watch the very people who raised us turn around and criticize us so deeply. Yet, they neglect the past has something to do with our current state.
Millennials are just another generation trying to survive; however, we have snap chat filters, Facebook likes, and Instagram dm's helping us along the way. Like or not in the near future we are going to be your presidents and mayors.
