Involuntary manslaughter is defined as, "the crime of killing another human being unlawfully but unintentionally."
That is precisely what Michelle Carter did in July of 2014. Her suicidal boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, sent her suicidal texts messages and she encouraged him to take his own life. She repeatedly asked him, "when are you gonna do it? Stop ignoring the question...
"So I guess you aren't gonna do it then. All that for nothing. I'm just confused. Like you were so ready and determined"
"If you don't do it you'll never do it.. You'll get it over with..."
"If you want it as bad as you say you do it's time to do it today. I don't think you want to do it so you're gonna have to prove me wrong."
Roy was hesitant to commit suicide. He took into account how his family would feel and those who would eventually find him in his car. If his girlfriend had not told him to get back into his carbon monoxide filled truck, there is a chance he would still be alive.
I am a strong defender of the First Amendment, but Carter took it a thousand steps too far. If your Free Speech harms another individual, then you should have to pay for the words you have spoken.
I cannot imagine the pain the Roy family has felt these past three years, but I pray that they can get the closure they need.
