It seems whenever you meet someone for the first time, or even are sitting around with friends you have known forever, the question "What's your favorite song?" seems to pop up in conversation. However, that questions begs another question "Is it possible to truly have one favorite song?" Much like the first question, the second is equally hard to answer, devil's advocate can be played on both sides.
On the one hand, there is a certain romantic idea that one song can stay forever at the number one of your playlist of life. That one certain song that stays forever in your heart, forever number one. What I like to do is ask "If I were on a desert island (you know that classic line of questioning) and I could only play one song, what would it be?" I like to think that my answer is the same all the time, that I have that "one" song that I could listen to all day and every day and still love it so much.
Yet, that just wouldn't be the truth. If I were to be asked the classic desert island question every other week for the next year, there is no doubt in my mind that my answer to which song would change. Because as times change so do moods and feelings, in turn so does song choice and preference.
Now, that doesn't mean there aren't songs I have loved for years and years, because there are. But, my perception of not only the song's meaning but what I take away from the song changes with time as well. A song that was once my favorite in 5th grade still holds sentimental in my heart, but another song has replaced it as my quote on quote "favorite".
That is not to say some people don't have a "favorite" song that they have loved forever and will love forever. But most people in the general population are just as confused as the rest of us. At the end of the day it's okay for your favorite song to either change or stays the same, and do not know the answer when someone asks the question "What's your favorite song?"
