This year, Apple announced the yearly additions to its flagship line, the iPhone. The iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X (pronounced 10) are Apple’s response to new releases by Samsung. However, these phones are weak in what they bring to the table. I will always support Apple, I love their products, and I have always wanted the newest thing. But this time, I’m not impressed.
I will not be purchasing either the 8 or the X. The 8 is almost exactly a copy-and-paste of the iPhone 7. The only differences are a glass back, 6 core processor and wireless charging. The True-Tone display doesn’t really change the display all that much, and the resolution is still the same. Even the hardware inside the cameras of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are the same as the 7 and 7 Plus. The only difference is how the A11 Bionic chip uses them. The iPhone 8 is good for someone who has an iPhone 6 or older, but if you have an iPhone 6s or newer, it’s almost the same.
The iPhone X is a major redesign for Apple, the new vertical camera and almost edge-to-edge screen do look quite stunning. However, the $1,000 price tag is a huge pill to swallow. And is it really worth it for a first-generation product? After all, Apple is releasing a lot of new things with the iPhone X. Things we’ve never seen before. A lot of these features could have issues right off the bat. Face ID is great, but just like with the iPhone 7, they didn’t wean us off the feature they were getting rid of. They ditched the headphone jack, and we got the dongle. Now we have Face ID, which will lock you out if you look at it the wrong way. It may be faster, and it may be slower, but it’s for sure no alternative to Touch ID.
The iPhone 8 is Apple’s new budget phone, in a sense. When the choice is to buy either a $800 iPhone 8, or a $1000 iPhone X, most people would go with the 8. But this year I’m keeping my beautiful iPhone 7 Plus.
In summary, the iPhone 8 and X are good phones, but these features aren’t new. I hate to say it, but Samsung has been doing these things for longer. We already had facial recognition, but we kept the home button. We’ve already had edge-to-edge displays, but we still had a home button. I believe in the quality of Apple products, which is why I buy them. But I’m going to wait until next year to buy my iPhone 11.
