College can be a scary experience, especially if you’re a resident and are living away from home for the first time. While It can be nerve-wracking, you do get a lot of real world experience in your field that can prepare you for employment. If you’re not currently involved in college, it’s never to late to start, whether you are a freshman or a senior

Last semester, I had the opportunity to become a volunteer reporter for Lindenwood’s student publication. I covered the education beat and occasionally reviewed concerts, songs and entire albums.

This experience allowed me to get over my fear of public speaking by interviewing people, taking pictures and video and networking by building relationships with people that I interviewed.

Then, this semester, I was given the opportunity to become the arts & entertainment Editor for our publication which was a new challenge for me to take on, but I can say that I love It!

Having these experiences in college has benefited me greatly by giving me real world experience. I can put all of this on my resume which will help me in landing a job.

My time in college will be coming to an end in December, and while I am sad to leave college, I will be thankful for the experiences that it’s brought me, the people that I’ve met and the resume that It helped me create. It’s helped me to create a resume that will stand out because I have so many skills I can add, programs that I know how to use and experience that I can add!

If you’re scared to get involved in college because you’re shy, don’t be! Getting involved is one of the greatest things you can do because not only does It provide you with experience, but you’ll meet new people, network and meet new friends that you will hopefully have for a lifetime.

I find myself not being afraid to talk to people and try new things that challenge me. I also found that I’m not afraid to suggest things and voice my opinion, and I fully believe that I have getting involved in School to thank for that.

These skills will also help me after graduation because being in the communications field, you can’t be afraid to talk to people! If you’re afraid to talk to people, then how will you meet new friends? How will you build your network? How will you try new things?

If you want to get involved but you don’t know where to start, your campus website is a good place to start. You can also look for flyers around campus and contact the people on them. There is a place on campus for everyone to feel welcome and get involved!

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
