This year was my first time having an internship, ever. I was afraid that I was super behind and that I should have been involved in interning way before my junior year. Many of my peers have had internships since they were in high school. Since I felt like a late bloomer compared to the people I am going to school with, I had to make sure that I got an internship for my junior year of college during the spring semester.
I applied to many journalism internships that I considered to be my "dream internships," but unfortunately I was not qualified for the jobs. I was running out of time, so I became desperate and applied to any internship I could; even if it wasn't in the same field as my major. I wanted to get six credits worth of internships so I had to make sure I got two internships for the spring semester.
Luckily, I was able to get two. One was for Quibbl, which is a media platform that provides a diverse newsfeed and allows its readers to compete to predict trends and verify stories. The other internship I had was for the online web marketing company located in Long Island City, New York, Agent-cy. Quibbl was a fit for my major because I was required to write articles and "quibbls" about entertainment news.
Interning for Agent-cy, however, was a bit different.
Even though I took the internship, I did think at first that it would be a better fit for business majors. I was really nervous during my first week working for Agent-cy and for my supervisor, Jasmine Sandler. Not having any type of knowledge in marketing and business made feel as though I would just be slowing Ms. Sandler down. I was relieved to find out that Ms. Sandler cared more about teaching me about business.
She wanted to make sure that I would receive a good learning experience while interning for her.
She was patient and understanding, so it wasn't a problem if she had to explain things to me more than once. After a few weeks of interning for her, I began to get used to how to do certain things. I had a better understanding of how marketing works and I began to notice that I was able to complete certain assignments faster than before. I learned so much from Ms. Sandler, and everything that I learned from this internship will definitely be beneficial for me in the future.
I now understand that getting involved in something that you do not have much knowledge in or is outside of your comfort zone is not really a bad thing. It could be a huge learning experience and could provide you with many opportunities in the future!
