You Don't Love Him, You Love The Attention

There is still something testy and potent about leaving the house this late and knowing who you are going to see.

As you're sitting down not really up to much, you have your phone sitting right next to you, if not on top of you, and you wait for that one text. If you are not waiting on a text or a desperate plead to make plans with that one person, your life is depending on that one Snapchat notification. Either way, you pull through and get excited when your phone lights up. Immediately you have to check and see if it's your knight in shining armor but by all means, you cannot seem too eager. So you may or may not wait for about 10 minutes to pass as you allow yourself to answer the bland message of "wyd" or "are you up?"

In most cases, your heart may drop when you finally get that text because you know what's up. You two aren't just hanging out and playing board games the whole night. Even though you may feel like you have the power to deny seeing him, the curious and single girl in you jumps with enthusiastic tension as you reply to their message. You check the time and it's just after 12 a.m. Although it may seem pretty late, it's summer and you have no morning plans so you send a casual text back reading, "not much, hbu?" or "yes I'm up."

You promptly jump out of bed and run straight to the mirror to check your make-up because let's be honest, you left it on all night for a reason. Beforehand, you casually touch it up keeping yourself up to date and you previously agreed that you would take it off if he did not message you by 1 a.m. After smacking on lip product and fixing your pre-curled hair, you cannot leave the house with a sports bra and t-shirt on, Victoria's Secret made push-up bras for a reason. Leggings are the way to go because you definitely do not want to seem like a try hard but also because it is 12 a.m.

Once you prep yourself a tad more, you patiently wait on your bed trying not to disturb your parents as you plan a quiet escape. Even though you are not 16 years old anymore, there is still something testy and potent about leaving the house this late and knowing who you are going to see. A few minutes later you check your phone and see the text, "here." As you jump up, you realize to take your time leaving the house because after all, he is waiting on you now.

It seems like you constantly cater to their every need and text. Sometimes you think you do not know how to not answer them and are not sure how to respect yourself. But at the same time, you can do what you want because you are your own person and growing to know what you like. However, when you work up the courage to text them first, they are always busy or "asleep." On rare occasion, they sometimes give you more attention than usual and you must remind yourself to think with your head and not your heart. You realize you do not love them, even though they make you laugh and cry, but you simply just yearn for their attention. Attention differs from love and cravings because different guys come and go and you cannot love someone who switches out assiduity for devotion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
