One of the first things I noticed when I got to college was how often I wanted to go out with friends, and how little extra money I had on hand to do so. Nobody likes being stuck doing something they hate, whether it's for extra money or not. So, after searching around a little, I finally found the perfect job: Being an independent consultant for Rodan + Fields.
R+F was getting recognized as the top skincare company in America, its products were doing amazing, and I fell in love with the business entirely. I came to find that no matter what the business was, independent consulting truly is the king of all jobs you could get in college.
1. You get to choose your own hours.
The worst part of working part-time is that it can take up your entire afternoon because you're usually stuck in 4 or 8-hour shifts. And if you need off, it's not always so easily given to you, and you have to go through the process of finding people to take your hours or work extra the next week. The beauty of independent consultant work is that you get to make your own hours, and work as much as you have time for. You can put in the work when you have time, and still make it to that birthday party on Saturday.
2. You can build an amazing social network while learning to step out of your comfort zone.
What's the single most important word in the college world? Oh yeah, NETWORKING. A lot of independent consultant jobs will have you use your social networks to reach out to people. You build your social networking skills while connecting with people, and learn to step out of your comfort zone by making these interactions. It builds your communication skills and then makes it easier to approach people in real life, whether it be to have a conversation or at a job fair.
3. You can make good money.
Just like any job, you're going to get paid for the work you do, except now at a higher percentage. In this case, it's finding customers to promote your good or service, and making money off of those goods or services sold. Many companies with independent consultants have extra money incentives for reaching certain goals in your business and even a top reward. For R+F, you can even earn a Lexus after hitting certain benchmarks! The way you earn money will also help to develop goal setting and organization skills.
4. It's a great conversation starter.
Whether you're waiting for class to start or out at a party, it's an easy and effective way to start a conversation. And, you never know, you could end up getting business out of that simple conversation!
5. It's an awesome resume builder.
When you're seeking an internship or a job, it never sounds bad when you can say you're a small business owner. A lot of employers will ask further questions and it makes you sound even more qualified when you're able to say all you do through consulting because it gives you a business/financial, networking, and hard working background. It also shows you're able to communicate and work well with others, which is what all employers want in a potential employee.
6. You can take your business anywhere you go.
Unlike your conventional store job, you are not tied down to just one location to work. Most of what you do will be done through your laptop, so you can literally work at any location, even your own couch! This also makes it much easier to go home on the weekends or travel because you're not stuck at a desk or store. You can finally go to that family event out of town without having to worry about work.
7. You can finally love what you do.
If you're going to work, you should at least like what you're doing. Independent consulting ranges from so many different businesses, so at least one of them will have something you're interested in, and you can be excited about having to work! A lot of what drives good work ethic is loving what you do, so find a consultant job you love, and run with it.
