Just fore-warning on this movie. There are many scenes that can potentially cause epileptic seizures, so please take pre-cautions. Now on to the review!
The only dream of college kids nowadays was not only to get through the school year, but to see the return of Pixar's first superhero family.
The Incredibles are back and with no time to spare, because the movie kicks off immediately where the first one ended, with the Underminer declaring war on the Overworld. Turns out superheroes are still looked down upon by the government except for one business tycoon and his sister. They team up with Elastigirl to bring supers into a more favorable light. While doing so they uncover our villain for the movie, the Screenslaver who threatens the livelihood of the supers. Many comic books fan will feel the "Golden Age of Superheroes" vibe. Essentially, its when it was just average people who had powers put on spandex and went out to save the world. No dark, grueling, or quipping necessary.
Was 14 years worth the wait for this movie? As a huge fan of the Incredibles, I don't think it was. That's not to say the movie wasn't good, it was, but I don't think it was as good as it could've been. The villain was decent, yeah they posed a threat, but they weren't really menacing. Except for the creep factor. There is one scene where that creep factor is on display and Pixar does a great job with it! It's personally one of my favorite scenes in the movie. However the more I think about it, the more I'm able to poke holes in the diabolical plan of the villain. Probably the weakest part of the story. Can you imagine if they used the Screen-slaver in the first Incredibles and used Syndrome in this one?
We do pick up with Violet, Dash with Jack-Jack and his ever growing list of powers. This kid stole the show whenever he was on screen. Violet is having boy troubles, if she wasn't, would it have even been in the movie? And Dash is as energetic as ever, however, compared to the rest of the characters, he seems to take a back seat in this movie. I wish we saw more of him, and maybe we will if they ever pick up a sequel.
Mr. and Mrs. Incredibles relationship feels very real and I believe many people will relate to it, minus the part about superpowers. They have to team up and make sacrifices for the other in order to help their family. The sacrifice that Mr. Incredible makes for the family turns into one of the funniest parts of the movie. However it's interesting, in the movie they say parenting is as super as being a hero. They're definitely right.
As I was watching the movie, I began to realize that the powers of those in the family relate to their character. Mr. Incredible is a dominant figure because he must be strong for his family. Mrs. Incredible can be flexible because she is pulled every which way to support her family. While Dash may need help with his homework, Jack-Jack might have a dirty diaper so she must be flexible. Violet is in her teenager years and teens usually like to not be seen and hang out in her room. Dash is energetic as a young lad and probably has a million thoughts at once that he wants to say, while Jack-Jack is the baby and very unpredictable. Their powers reflect their personality, and Pixar shows that even a family with completely different powers can come together and love each other.
Frozone also shows up and does a great job in this movie. His ice power animation is a lot better than the first, it shows where 14 years of technology can take us. Also, our visits with Edna are always enjoyable.
This movie is more than worth your time this summer. It's a perfect family, date night, or just hang out and have fun kind of movie. This is for all audiences and I believe they'll have a great time with this incredible flick....get it? I'll see myself out...
