I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t very involved in high school. I was a band nerd (kind of ) because I marched with the band while I was in color guard. Besides the band, I didn’t really do anything else. So I made a vow when I got to college to become more involved in regards to everything! I don’t regret it and here’s why:
1. I made new friends
I know this is a very basic one, but this is honestly the best way to make new friends. Especially if you got to a college where you don’t really know anyone.
2. I learned more about my campus
There would’ve places I would have never gone on campus if I didn't join certain organizations
3. I met people I wouldn’t normally talk to
It’s human nature to want to hang out with people who are similar to you, but when you’re put in a group of people who you normally wouldn’t talk to you make new connections!
4. I learned how to balance
I’m apart of a programming board and an RA, plus I’m taking a full course load, you learn how to balance these things!
5. I learned leadership skills
Not good at speaking in front of a large group of people? Becoming part of the Executive board definitely helps you with that
6. I gained professional skills
Along with leadership skills I’ve also learned how to run a meeting and delegate. Sometimes people don’t learn these skills until they’re in their field
7. There’s free stuff involved
Half of my wardrobe now consists of t-shirts I accumulated through my organizations
8. It’s fun!
Sometimes you get to meet celebrities or host dance parties, it really depends how involved you are!
9. You learn more about what you’re interested in
Want to have outside the classroom discussions about
10. It looks great for Grad school
Especially if you’re trying to become a grad assistant
11. It gives you an outlet
Joining organizations helps you not stay in the library 24/7 while still doing something constructive
12. You can redeem yourself for not getting involved in high school
Regret not doing anything high school? College is a brand new start!
