My face feels as if it's on fire, the room feels as if it's spinning and my mental health feels as if it's falling apart. When I get stressed out or overwhelmed in the slightest bit, I usually don't know what to do — you know, other than just drown in my worries.
Stress is something we all face, and some of us stress out more than others. Stress doesn't only negatively affect your mental health, but it also has the potential to negatively affect your physical health. That is why it is so important to take care of your mind, body and soul. You should always make time for self-care.
First things first, self-care is not selfish. Please do not feel guilty for making time for yourself. Avoiding self-care will only negatively impact you in the long run.
Self-care is different for everyone. Everyone will have a different form of self-care. Some will wear face masks, some will get manicures and some will go shopping. Others will simply take a shower or get out of bed, and that will be enough for them.
No kind of self-care is silly, no matter how small.
Personally speaking, watching one of my favorite movies is the greatest self-care I can treat myself with. It allows me to get my mind off things and mentally escape from my worries for a while. When I don't have enough time to watch a movie or feel too exhausted to sacrifice two hours of my sleep for a movie, simply watching any video with my idol in it makes me feel a lot better.
A 10-minute interview with my idol has calmed my anxiety and fought my darkest thoughts. Even a 30-second video of my idol has the power to make me feel OK.
My self-care might not be like yours, and that is perfectly fine. We all find zen is something. What brings peace and serenity to me may do the opposite for you. Your self-care is valid regardless of what it might be.
We don't always prioritize self-care because we are so consumed with our assignments, deadlines and responsibilities. Sometimes, it feels like there isn't enough time to even take a shower. Sometimes, the only time we get to ourselves is when we are scrolling on our phones right before bed.
There have been times when I haven't felt like myself because I was simply a walking product of stress and anxiety. I notice myself becoming agitated and having a breakdown over the smallest instances.
Whatever might be stressing you out, take a step back, breathe and be kind to yourself.
Take a shower. Listen to your favorite song. Buy yourself a coffee. Take a walk. Get out of bed. Treat yourself.
And always show love to your mind, body and soul.
