Suriving Finals Week Through Commnity

Why we should not isolate ourselves from others for the next few weeks.

Finals are approaching quickly. The amount of time left to complete research papers and study for finals is dwindling. It is easy to be tempted to lock yourself away in your room and focus on studying by yourself. However, there is value in community and this time of the semester is not different.

Being a part of a community is a great way to learn, grow and stay focused. It is also a way to stay encouraged. We can also use the presence of others and conversation as a chance to unwind and refresh our minds.

Do not get me wrong, we should study on our own and finals week is probably not the week to go to a party. Although, there are several ways we can use community during finals week to our benefit.

Study Groups

Study groups are great not only for comparing notes but also for discussion. Find a group of equally dedicated students and set a time to get together, even if it is only for an hour.

Study Sessions Hosted by TA's or Professors.

If you are lucky enough to have a professor host a study session attend! Ask questions and listen to other's questions. Teachers and TA's often reveal tricky questions and places to focus your studying on. If they find it important to take extra time to review with you, you should attend!

Check On Your Friends!

Check in with them! They are just as a stressed as you and need to vent as much as you do. Grab a coffee or a pizza and make sure they are doing okay. It is also a great way to clear your mind for forty minutes and give yourself a chance to start fresh when you return to study.

Attend Your Classes

Do not get me wrong, I understand the temptation to skip class to study for another class. It is likely not worth it during finals week. Attend your classes and get the notes for the finals. Your overall grade will thank you for your attendance.

Go to the Libary

This is the easiest way to be around people without actually having to communicate. While communication is important, visibly seeing others in the same position as you can be encouraging. Also, if you are worried about falling asleep while studying your biology notes this might be a way to keep yourself awake. It is also a good way to escape your noisy roommate.

Over the next few weeks, remember the importance of community! Consider what we have to offer to others and what they can offer our learning! Check in with your friends and offer support. We are all struggling and stressed out; we might as well be stressed together.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
