The Importance Of Giving Yourself A Mental Break

We all need a break.

Allowing yourself to have a mental break every now and again helps prevent an overload of stress and anxiety within your brain. This in turn will cause you to have a more uplifted mentality and not gravitate towards the pessimistic side of life.

There is no shame in taking a mental health day for yourself. There tends to be a stigma in today's society that being anything less than happy is seen as a "weak." However, it is important to recognize that no one is absolutely happy 100% of the time. Our emotions define who we are and you will have days where you feel like you're on top of the world, and some where it just seems that nothing is going your way, and you know what?THAT IS OKAY!

When you are stuck in a limbo of feeling down in the dumps, remember to take care of yourself because you're only human and no matter how invincible you may feel, everyone needs time to themselves to decompose mentally. If you push yourself to your mental breaking point, you'll begin to notice that you won't be able to focus as much and it'll seem like you're just running on empty.

The famous saying, "Treat 'Yo Self," does not necessarily mean that you need to spend hundreds of dollars on fancy things in order to de-stress and feel fulfilled. There are plenty of other ways to give yourself some love that will not only save your bank account, but give your mind a well-deserved rest and recharge.

1. Give yourself 10 minutes in every hour of you-time.  Read, listen to music, eat, do anything FOR YOURSELF!

2. Buy a simple $1 face mask, turn on your favorite playlist, and relax.

3. Go for a walk outside without your phone. No distractions, just you.

4. Take a nap and don’t set an alarm.

5. Make some popcorn, pick out your favorite movie, and spend the afternoon wrapped up in a blanket.

6. Grab your favorite bath bomb and take a nice, warm bath.

7. Devote more time towards your hobby

8. Open up a notebook and journal about your day or about anything that’s on your mind.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
