Being self-conscious is human nature. It's a feeling that many are familiar with; being uncomfortable in your skin, thinking that the whole world is judging you. Sure, it sucks, but it's something that everyone goes through. Now, however, one hugely targeted group is coming back and sharing their stories on Twitter: fat girls.
Through the hashtag #FatSideStories, fat girls have been sharing the stories of struggles they have been through just because they're slightly bigger. These beautiful women have told the stories of their hardships, from being judged by peers and friends, to being treated as less in the workforce. The hashtag is full of struggle, loss, pain, grief, and any and all types of pain. One tweet from the hashtag reads, "Losing 35 lbs because of an eating disorder and being told by doctors to continue doing such a great job #fatsidestories." A health professional encouraged a woman to keep on the self-destructive path that she was on because it was helping her lose weight.
Some people will sit back in judgement of those in the hashtag. They'll sit back and judge from a place of privilege, from a place in society where they aren't judged simply because of their weight. They'll wonder why this hashtag is needed, why we need to separate and divide rather than all be united.
#FatSideStories is needed as a place for fat girls to tell the stories they've held to their chest, kept inside and bottle up. It's needed as an acknowledgement that these feelings are valid and true. It's needed to show fat girls that the feelings of self-doubt are normal, that society conditions girls like us to feel uncomfortable in our bodies.
Tweets like the one shown above embody the overall feelings produced from the hashtag. Many were inspired by seeing those in the same situation as them, but there is a lingering sadness there that comes from a large group of people feeling these same, horrible feelings. Where there is the joy of unity, there is the sadness of what brings us together.
If you are a fat girl, know that there are people who will love you no matter what, that there are people who deserve to have your incredible light and joy in their life. They might not be here yet, but they're out there.
If you are a skinny person, please sit back and think before you say things to others. Something that you might think isn't offensive, something you even think might be nice, can lead to someone's whole day being ruined.
If you are a compassionate human being, please take the time to be nice to people. Please take the time to be kind. Please spread positivity and happiness wherever you go, because the world has enough darkness as it is.
