Ah yes, Easter. The celebration of Jesus Christ's resurrection that is glossed over with a bunny and colored eggs. Don't get me wrong, I love Easter, I just find it funny sometimes how Christian holidays are celebrated.
I'm not here to talk about that issue though. No, I want to talk about how despite being in my 20's now, I think it's still important to have fun and get into the Easter spirit.
Growing up I always remember the hard boiled eggs all cooled off and the set up to dip them into colors to make them pretty. Even though they never last long and were either turned into egg salad or tossed, it's still such a fond memory and something I look forward to every single year.
I think being older makes it a tad more fun too. I have a new appreciation for that time I can sit down with my family and just laugh and do something as simple as coloring eggs, but still having a great time together. Life can get a bit stressful and crazy and sometimes I go a little while without seeing my Dad- who is the one who celebrates this holiday as my mom is Jewish- so it's nice to actually be together. Even if we don't color eggs and just do dinner, I feel really happy.
Easter egg hunts are also a strong memory for me. The excitement and anticipation, the whole event was just a blast and racing with my siblings was something I loved. One of my favorite memories to look back on is actually a year we couldn't find an egg. It wasn't too long after, maybe a couple days, I remember getting ready and just seeing it. It was quite a big deal and I was quite proud of myself for being the one to discover it.
I've recently been able to tap into even more of that fun. I work at a daycare and I love doing things for the kids. So, I went to the store and got easter eggs to hide for them. I had a mug of loose change in my room and I place some coins in each egg. Now, I had 15 kids that day and I wanted them all to at least get 12 eggs. So, I hid 180 eggs. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it to see them running around and getting so happy to see the money hidden inside. It was also a hunt for me as I had no idea where some were when they asked for some help.
My sister even did my face paint and we got some ears. I got to be the easter bunny, I got to bring joy to these kids.
Nothing could even compare to the happiness I felt that afternoon.
I think it's important to celebrate Easter and be a kid again, despite your age. Just have fun with it and enjoy the people in your life you're able to be with. If you have kids you get to celebrate with it's even more special. I felt really festive. I gave the younger kids little-stuffed animals meant for Easter, I even gave one to each member of my support group. I just felt like giving and making people happy.
What do you do to celebrate Easter? What part do you look forward to most? I'd love to know.
