This is an idea that we've all heard time and time again. In every movie or book where there's some sort of older, wiser, character, I'm sure they've uttered that phrase in some variance. As cliché as it may sound, and as common as we come across it, it truly is important to remember the little moments in life and to cherish them.
Memories are ingrained in us forever. Some of them are not so pleasant, and some of them are fantastic. When you think back on your favorite memory, it makes you smile. There's a good chance that it was something big for you. It could have been the time you saw your favorite band front row with your best friend. Maybe it was the time you become the owner of your fur baby. Was it your birthday? Y'know, the one where you went out and had the time of your life with the people that meant the most to you. You can remember it so vividly that it's almost like it happened yesterday. Those memories are the ones that you might talk about on a regular basis. They become an extension of you that just roll off your tongue when the time comes.
While those moments are to be cherished, there are tinier ones that are just below the surface. If you've seen "Harry Potter" once or twice — or in my case, too many times to count — these moments would be the perfect reason to have a Pensieve. These memories are the kind that hit you when you're on the way to class in the middle of the afternoon. It's the first time that you can see flowers blooming and the sun is out. It's a comfortable temperature outside and the weather finally being less temperamental. Nearby, deep purple hydrangeas are stretching toward the sun, and you're immediately thrown back to when you were younger and your neighbor's bushes were full of them. You would help her clip them off and save some for yourself.
It's later that day and you're at the store when you spot a can of Monster Energy Drink. It hits you that one time you snuck those into your house with your best friend because you thought you would get in trouble with your mom.
It's moments like these that shouldn't be taken for granted. The feel-good, warm-your-heart, forgot-this-existed types of memories. The ones that are triggered by hydrangeas or the logo on a can of Monster. These are the happy moments that can get you through the toughest times.
