I'm A Feminist; You Should Be One, Too

Why feminism still matters in 2019.

Most of you have probably heard of the typical "Here's Why We Don't Need Feminism" articles. Those articles are most likely written by people who don't understand fully what Feminism actually is. No, Feminism is not man-hating, man-bashing, or women putting themselves in any way above men. Feminism really doesn't have much to do with men at all, actually.

However, it is important to note that Feminists do care about men's issues, but in a sense that the Patriarchy creates these male-gendered problems. (That facet of Feminism is a bit complicated to explain.) Yes, Feminism is absolutely about gender equality, but the most important aspect of Feminism focuses on empowering women and helping women get to their best selves.

It's 2019, and women still have to worry about the wage gap, breaking through the glass ceiling, sexism, misogyny, high probability of sexual assault, reproductive rights, and other incredibly frustrating issues.

Sure, the women who fought tooth and nail for the rights that most women have today would be absolutely thrilled at the levels of progress we've made in some areas, but if these women were alive today, I'm pretty sure that they'd still say we have work to do. I would certainly say that.

The fact that we still have people around today that think we don't need Feminism is both sad and not surprising. We are all equal—plain and simple. A woman is no better than a man, and a man is no better than a woman.

With that being said, it's time to clear up a few points that some people have gotten horribly wrong.

1. Feminists are not all "hairy, man-hating, lesbians."

This notion is actually incredibly misogynistic, archaic, and honestly super degrading. Not only does this stereotype further marginalize members of the LGBTQ+ community, it's also filled with so much hate that it's sickening.

2. Feminists do not think they are better or "above" men.

As I've stated before, Feminism is, at its roots, focused on helping women break down the barriers that our patriarchal society has put in place. Feminists aren't here to put men down; we're here to help other women.

3. Feminists do not think all men are bad, evil, or rapists.

We certainly don't think that all men are awful, but the atmosphere of toxic masculinity is prevalent in enough men's lives that people certainly do take notice. As the popular saying goes: not all men, but enough men. If you're a man and you're reading this, take it upon yourself to step up and tell your "bros" that rape jokes aren't cool; degrading women isn't cool. Be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem.

I could go on, but suffice it to say that those misinformed individuals who think we don't need feminism in 2019 are dead wrong. If you're reading this and you happen to agree with the points that I've made, that's awesome, and I hope you take it upon yourself to keep fighting for Women's Rights. I hope that you would agree with the stance that "Feminism is necessary." But, if this article just pissed you off, maybe take a step back and ask yourself why this pissed you off.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
