Sometimes it's really, really hard for me to come up with things to write about. I always feel torn between wanting to write about something I have a personal interest in, something I think my friends would enjoy, or something I think the general population would want to take in. It’s just not in my nature to be the kind of person who wants to risk offending anyone in any way.
But that’s not the case today.
Today, I'm pretty pissed.
I have something I don’t feel I should have to write about, but it’s something that needs to be said and heard.
Also, I guess take this as a trigger warning for foul language, which is something else I don’t like using, but oh well. C'est la vie.
I don't want to say that the devastating and traumatic shooting that happened in Las Vegas could have been prevented — when people get irrational and awful ideas in their heads, sometimes there's no stopping them—but I do think it could have been a lot different if we as a nation had stronger gun laws. And who knows, maybe this tragedy could have been prevented. Sadly it’s too late for us to know.
But yes, nonetheless, I said it. We as a country need to get a better control on our gun laws. Plain and simple. And yes, GOP, now is the time to talk about it.
Why would it not be the right time? It’s too soon?
Bullshit.
You — the GOP — want to push off the fact that you’re partly responsible for the mass shootings that occurred in Las Vegas, NV, Orlando, FL, Dallas, TX, San Bernardino, CA, Colorado Springs, CO, Roseberg, OR, Chattanooga, TN, Charleston, SC, Marysville, WA, Isla Vista, CA, Killeen, TX (2014), Washington DC, Santa Monica, CA, Sandy Hook, CT, Brookfield, WI, Minneapolis, MN, Oak Creek, WI, Aurora, CO, Seal Beach, CA, Tucson, AZ, Manchester, CT, Huntsville, AL, Killeen, TX (2009), Binghamton, NY, DeKalb, IL, Omaha, NB, Virginia Tech, VA, and so many other places. Hoping that the public will forget with the passing of time.
How many innocent lives need to be lost before it’s time to talk about it? How many families need to be torn apart before we realize that yes, there is a problem?
I’m not sure how many you think, but I think we're way past that number at one.
Maybe if the GOP wasn’t allowing themselves to be fondled and have their wallets packed by the NRA and gun lobbyists then they would see how it’s so wrong.
10 years ago I would have never seen myself writing about this topic, let alone taking this position on the subject. I was very, "It's the second amendment, Government. Don't try to tell me what I can or cannot buy or own." I remember a speech class I was taking at the time where my final speech was on gun control and how it's too strict.
If only I knew what I really was talking about. I cringe when thinking about that speech now. Back then I was naive and listened too closely to what my friends were saying at the time. I was simply trying to fit in.
But now — now, I have so many questions.
What the fuck is up, America?
Why do guns give a majority of the population such a huge ego boost? Why do we need semi-automatic long guns that can hold armor-piercing rounds? Why do we need to sell suppressors for firearms? Why do we allow the sale of items that can modify, already highly deadly, semi-automatic rifles so they can basically be turned into full-on machine guns? Just, why? I really don't understand and would like to seriously know.
I know I may sound like some crazy liberal who wants to take away all guns—but that’s not what I’m going for. I just want us, as a country, to start being more responsible.
More rules and regulations are needed for the sale firearms. Unneeded mods (suppressors and bump stocks, for example) shouldn’t be sold. And really, should AR-style guns be sold in general? I mean, sure, it is fun to shoot guns—I’ve done it before. I didn’t shoot an AR-style gun, though, just a bolt action rifle which was still really a fun experience!
I even have a license to carry a concealed handgun in Washington State; I don’t own one, but I guess I could if I wanted. Although I can issue with that too, as literally all I had to do to get the license was fill out some paperwork and be fingerprinted. I think it’s more difficult to get food handlers permit than it is to get a concealed carry license.
So yes, America, please tell me why I’m wrong. Tell me why we don’t need stricter gun laws. I’d love to hear it.
Oh, and once you get done telling me, go tell some of the 50+ families who had their lives flipped upside down in Las Vegas.
