If you haven't heard about this issue, in 2012, Colorado baker Jack Phillips refused to make a customized cake for a same-sex couple at Masterpiece Cakeshop. However, he told the couple that he would gladly sell them anything else BUT their wedding cake. Jack stated, "It's not about turning away these customers, it's about doing a cake for an event -- a religious sacred event -- that conflicts with my conscience."
The Colorado Civil Rights Commission was furious and quick to judge. It showed hostility toward Jack over his religious preferences, which goes against the First Amendment.
Thankfully, the Supreme Court saw it this way too. On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled in Jack's favor, saying, "The Commission's hostility was inconsistent with the First Amendment's guarantee that our laws be applied in a manner that is neutral toward religion."
So what's the big deal?
A Christian man is trying to be silenced by liberals and liberal media. That's the big deal. No one cares about the fact that Masterpiece Cakeshop has been losing business since the issue arose. No one cares that Jack has to keep laying off his workers because they think he did the wrong thing. He's not been entitled to anything, as most people would assume. His business has suffered because he made the right decision, and that's pretty saddening.
I follow a lot of wedding accounts on Instagram like WeddingWire, The Knot, and Disney Weddings, but I decided I couldn't stand the negativity I was seeing in my newsfeed anymore. I made my point in the form of a comment, which I posted, and then unfollowed several accounts. The nasty comments I received back made me realize just how intolerant the Left truly is. Leftists everywhere say that Republicans are the intolerant half of American citizens, but I beg to differ.
The Knot
How am I discriminating against gay couples because gay marriage is against my religion? In the Bible, Matthew 19:4-5 says, "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,'and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?" If you claim to be a Christian, don't try to tell me that God says it's okay.
Sure, he says to love everyone, but that doesn't mean I have to keep my mouth shut and endure this disgusting lifestyle. It wouldn't be very loving to allow people to live in sin like that without speaking out against it.
So why is it right for the CEO of The Knot to discriminate against this poor baker, and it's not right for me to discriminate against same-sex marriages which go against everything I believe in?
Jack wrote an article for the Washington Post on April 26th and enclosed several disheartening questions. "Will my shop survive the 40 percent loss of business that we suffered when the government forced us to decide to stop designing wedding cakes? Or will everything that my wife and I worked for be gone?"
Why didn't the same-sex couple just go to a different bakery for their wedding cake? It's not as though there aren't other bakeries in Lakewood, Colorado (which there are). I'm sure they could have found a different business, but instead, they chose to rob this baker of 40% of his business.
Just as I will stand for my National Anthem out of respect for my country, I will stand with Jack and his moral choice.
