I Can't Drive, But I Already Know That I Don't Ever Want To, Here Are The Reasons Why

I refuse to learn how to drive.

Driving

There are some things in life that you know aren't meant to be for you, and in my case, it's driving. My mom tried to convince me to take driving lessons over the summer, but I just couldn't make myself do it. I feel as if I'm just not meant to be a driver, and I can't even imagine myself behind the wheel. Plus, there are alternatives to driving that I feel much more comfortable with. For example, taking a train or an Uber can work just as well (most of the time). Nonetheless, here are the top five reasons why I don't want to drive.

I’ll get road rage easily

Patience is not my virtue, so having me behind the wheel is basically the same thing as putting my patience to the test. I'm the type of person who would honk at you at a red light even though it's a red light. If you're the unlucky passenger in my car during rush hour, I guarantee you that you'll hear me complain to myself. I also have little patience for when I'm stuck behind a slow car and cannot change lanes. It's not that I like to drive fast, but if I'm in the car, then I'll want to get to my destination as soon as possible, you know?

I’m bad at directions

Even though I live in New York City, I still get lost even when I'm walking. I'm the New Yorker who has to use Google Maps despite the fact that I've been to Manhattan innumerable times. I usually have to stop in the middle of the street to orient myself because when you use Google Maps, there's a built-in compass, so whenever you turn, you turn on the map, as well. Given this, imagine me behind the wheel trying to find directions and not being able to stop or else I'll get honked at.

Finding parking is a pain

This is especially true if you live in NYC. I remember the time when my dad spent almost one hour trying to find a parking spot on a Sunday, and when he eventually did, it was a good 20-minute walk from the restaurant that we were eating at. At that point, I would rather take the train because there are subway stations all over the city, and there's bound to be a stop close to where you want to go. There are also signs posted along the sidewalks that restrict you from parking there at a certain time, and if you don't read it and if you're not lucky, you're going to get a ticket or your car towed.

I don’t want to be the designated driver

In almost every friend group, there is always the one friend who is the designated driver and that person has to drive to restaurants, shopping malls, their friends' house, you name it. I know that you know a person like this or maybe it's you, and if that's the case, then my thoughts and prayers go out to you. If I had my own car, then I wouldn't mind driving someone here and there once in a while as long as the destination isn't more than 30 minutes away, but if they abuse their privilege, then that's where I'm drawing the line.

I’m scared to drive

When I was younger, I actually thought it would be really cool to have my own car and be able to drive, but when you hear about so many car accidents on the news and read about them from online, you get scared yourself. Driving in real life is no "Mario Kart" where if you fall off the edge of a cliff, there'll be someone who's going to rescue you. They're real people out there, and once you get in the car, you're responsible for not only your safety but also for the safety of other drivers, as well.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
