With writing being such a universal creative outlet for expressing oneself, it's nice to see someone use that passion to inspire. Kilani Sky Sierra is a 21-year-old New York native who has lived in Orlando for the past thirteen years. She currently goes to Full Sail University and is pursuing her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Creative Writing for an Entertainment Degree. I sat back and asked her a few questions about her writing and producing to get some insight into her life.

Q: What type of writing/videos do you produce?

"I write poetry, scripts, flash fiction, and short stories. I try to do as much as possible when it comes to writing. My main goal is to write for television, so I try to make projects that go along with that. For instance, I'm writing a web series right now. As for videos, my channel mainly has lifestyle videos. I want to transition into making poetry videos, and showcasing short films and web series episodes that I will take part in making."

Q: What got you into writing stories/poems and producing?

"I've always gravitated to writing growing up. I was an avid reader, so I just naturally found a voice when it came to creative writing. I first started writing poetry in the 8th grade, and as the years went on I wrote more and more and progressed from there. I even had two of my poems published in my high schools' literary magazine. I also loved tv and movies growing up, the stories told in my favorite TV shows stayed with me for a long time. Because of that, I saw visual storytelling as an outlet that I should take."

Q: Who do you look up to in the writing industry?

"There are so many "Greats" when it comes to writing, that it's hard to choose."

Q: What do you think is important of writing and expression?

"I think writing is a great way for people to express their minds in a positive way. We all have stories to tell and writing, to me, is such an important way that stories come to life."

Q: What are your goals in 2018 for your writing and videos?

"I want to produce more of my scripts. For instance, the web series I am working on. Also the short films I have written. I also want to participate in open mics and post poetry videos on YouTube. Minute long and 5 minutes short film videos is definitely something I’m trying to post on YouTube this year."

Q: What can you say to someone that wants to get into writing/spoken word?

"I would say the practice is all you need. The more you do it and work on it, the better you’ll be."

Q: What do you think about the new trend of Instagram poetry and it opening audiences to it?

"I think if poetry is getting to younger people, then it’s a good thing. Every generation has their own way of getting information and for the youth now, Instagram poetry is it. I’m just happy that poems are still being written and shared."

Q: How has the YouTube platform changed the way you're able to produce and be creative?

"I think it has given me an opportunity to share my writing and art on a much bigger platform. I’ve always enjoyed making videos so it was just a fun way to make new things for me. I think now that I have YouTube as a platform, I will incorporate visual storytelling way more with poetry and the stories I write."

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
