High School Musical. Just three words, and yet it speaks to an entire generation of people. It’s not just a movie, but a mantra, a motto, a lifestyle. Earlier this week was the 10-year anniversary and reunion of this iconic musical and it was nothing short of incredible. There was music, throwbacks, laughs, and so much more. For me, I was ten years old when the movie came out on Disney Channel. I was in fourth grade, and I remember watching it for the first time. It’s just incredible that something that was so important to me 10 years ago is still relevant today. To be honest, it was seriously the best thing ever, and here’s why:
One reason why this reunion was so great was getting to see the cast together again after so many years. It’s wonderful to see that even though ten years have passed, they still cherish High School Musical as much as they used to. However, Zac Efron, who played the iconic role of Troy Bolton, was MIA from the reunion. It’s unclear why, but he at least sent in a video saying how much he loved the cast and how HSM will always have a special place in his heart, which was great to see.
Another reason why I loved the reunion is because I think it will expose the movie to a new generation. HSM was big when I was growing up, and is still a huge favorite with girls my age – so girls in college. But what about those elementary and middle school kids today? Do they love High School Musical as much as I do? Have they even been introduced to this incredible musical? The best thing about the movie is that it has a million themes that are universal. Just about any kid that watches it can find something in that movie that they can relate to. This is why kids need to continue watching the movie, and hopefully the reunion opened their eyes to this incredible movie.
Lastly, what made this reunion so great was getting to reflect on my favorite moments and getting to remind myself why this movie is still relevant today. I got the chance to sing along to all of the songs (yes I know every single word to every single song – don’t judge) and I got to do the dance to “We’re All in This Together” which I memorized. I do not consider myself a great dancer by any sense of the word, but let me tell ya, I can get down to that song. Most importantly, it reminded me that we should never “stick to the status quo.” The majority of the fandom may be in college now, but I think that rule can still apply there. Don’t be afraid to be yourself and push some boundaries. Step outside of your box at least once, you may discover a whole new side of yourself.
All in all, High School Musical was and is still one of my favorite musicals of all time. It touched my heart and I hope it continues to touch others as well. Thank you Disney Channel for such a great reunion. It was truly incredible.
