If I'm being perfectly honest, the idea for this article came about due to my own inability to come up with a topic to write about. Not much has happened recently surrounding film that I didn't already cover and I had a long week at work, which gave me less time to think of ideas. This led to the conclusion that I should just discuss the ways I personally overcome writer's block.
One of the best ways to overcome writer's block is to write what's on your mind (no duh). Write about the things that constantly float around in your head and develop those ideas further by focusing on the details. I'm deeply interested in the entertainment and art industries (if you didn't already know), so I usually stay up-to-date on topics that concern the industry and write about those.
Every now and then, however, you just have one of those days where much isn't happening and you just can't figure out what to write about. During this period I usually walk over to my DVD/Blu-ray collection and stare at the various films I have seen. Usually, when I look them over, some kind of idea sparks about a certain film or franchise and I just start developing a topic around that.
Other times I can rely on recent events surrounding a film to spark a topic. The article I did about Super Bowl trailers was written because I was watching the game with my family and I usually look forward to watching the trailers for new films. This gave me the idea to write about the new trailers and which ones looked interesting to me.
The one thing you usually need to defeat writer's block is a solid hook or idea. You need to come up with a concept that you believe will catch a readers interest and make them want to read more out of curiosity. Then develop interesting questions and ideas you have surrounding that topic so you're article turns into more than just click bait.
Another technique I use while writing is thinking while walking. Usually when I get stuck or lose focus while in the middle of writing an article, I stand up and start pacing around the room or the house, which allows me to think harder and concentrate on certain details surrounding a topic. I find it easier to think while my body is active and moving rather than stationary.
These are just a few ideas for people who have a hard time coming up with topics or developing those topics beyond simple concepts. Many reading this article might have different ways of dealing with writer's block. These are just a few examples I gave from personal experience for others to try and I hope those with different methods share their personal methods as well.
