Even though I don’t have the curliest of curly hair, I do have very curly locks and sometimes struggle with getting it to look the way I want. I always hated getting my haircut because having to get all the knots brushed out was so painful for me. This was something I struggled with up until about high school. Then I watched videos, read articles, and learned techniques that could help with my hair.
I’m not saying my hair looks runway ready at all times, but I have learned to make it at least look like I brushed it that day and not a total hot mess.
After the few years of mastering my technique, I have decided to share with my fellow curly haired people my secrets to great looking curly hair. Just remember to embrace the curls and don’t try to hide them! Also keep away from heat as much as possible. It’s so important to try to not let split ends form as much as possible. Keeping away from the heat is going to help also not destroy those curls.
The first step to my routine is when washing my hair I make sure to put a lot of conditioner in my hair. I like to focus the conditioner on the ends of my hair because for me that is where my hair will get dry and loses a lot of its curl. Which can just happen over time or if there’s enough damage to the hair.
My favorite shampoo to use is the Herbal Essence 'Honey I’m Strong' shampoo and conditioner, but again that is just personal preference. I just feel like for my hair it works best but if you have another shampoo/conditioner that works better go ahead and use that. Now I don’t get super greasy hair and I only wash my hair twice a week, which professionals will recommend that you shouldn’t wash your hair every day.

Now the next step is very important to curly hair and if you have curly hair you know the struggle of brushing it. It hurts, I understand, but it’s something we all have to do. Now, to prevent frizziness only brush your hair when it’s wet. This doesn’t mean you can only brush your hair when you wash it; Sometimes, in the shower, I’ll just wet my hair and brush it when I get out. The main point is, just don’t brush it dry or else your hair is gonna be huge — Trust me been there and done that and it’s not pretty.
The next step is one I like to do and think helps a lot with keeping the curls but again it’s all personal preference. One of my favorite hair products to use is the Not Your Mother's beach babe soft waves sea salt spray. This is magic if you have really curly hair or just soft waves. I just spray it all over and just try to produce better curls. Sometimes I do scrunch my hair or wrapping it around my fingers and it is just magic. It just does so much great things for my hair and I can’t get enough of it.
Another thing I like to do in my hair routine is to add the renewing argan oil of Morocco. I don’t know if that’s the brand not, but it’s in a gold bottle. I will put this on after the sea salt spray and it just gives it a healthy shine and sometimes curly hair will get dry and adding just a small amount of this argan oil is life changing.
These steps are all how I’ve learned to treat my curls properly, and I’ve learned how to love my curls.
