Many companies make use of modern technology aids to make processes more efficient. Also, translation agencies have discovered the benefits of using databases to optimize the translation process. But how do they use them and how do they still guarantee quality of the work that is performed?

Translation Memory

A translation memory is a database filled with segments of sentences and words. The memory is built up by translators and is reused every time a translation job is performed. The translation memory can support the translator during the translation process. It gives suggestion and advise on how certain. The translator decides if the translation of the translation memory will be used eventually. For example, when a translator must translate website texts, the program will advise relevant website keywords and common names.

How does it work?

The translation memory is used by the translator as a tool to support them during the task. During the process the translation memory gives suggestions to the person who is performing the translation. The software will advise the person when it sees opportunities to supplement sentences or words.

Benefits of using a translation memory

The use of a translation memory has many benefits for the translator and the client. Firstly, it saves a lot of time. With the use of this tool translators can translate text much faster. Because translation agencies can perform the jobs much faster, they can keep costs lower. Secondly, due to the translation memory the translated text is much more consistent. Because the memory is set up both by the translator and client the words and sentences used are consistent. This makes it easier and better to read and therefore improves the quality of the translation.

Does the translation memory eventually replace a human translator?

Although the translation memory does make the process more efficient, it does not mean that is can replace a human translator. A translation memory is not the same as a translation machine. A translation machine is fully automized. Unfortunately, it often does not produce hight quality translations. With the use of a translation memory the human translator stays in control. It only advises the person in charge to make the process more efficient and consistent. The translator still is responsible for the quality of the task.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
