How To Travel On The Cheap

So, you're a college student who loves adventure and excitement? Well, traveling the world is the most beneficial way to explore all the exciting places you could only dream of seeing. Anything is possible, including traveling the world for cheap. Here is a how-to-guide on the basics of traveling on a college-student budget!

1. Pick a place and just do it.

You can't tell yourself that you should not be spending money on a vacation because you have student loans that you need to pay off. If you really want to travel, you need to put all other needs aside and just buy your plane ticket.

2. Find a cheap hotel.

The more friends you invite, the less expensive the room and board will cost for the trip. If you have two queen sized beds in the hotel room, invite three friends and split the cost for the vacation four ways. It will be much more inexpensive.

3. Saving for the trip.

If you have a job, whatever it may be, put aside 25 percent of your earnings in your savings and DO NOT TOUCH IT! Once the money is put away, forget that it is even there. Another great way to save money is to put all of your change into a jar at the end of each day..same thing goes for one dollar and five dollar bills. This amount of cash is small, but after a few weeks, you'd be surprised by how much you can save.

4. Planning activities.

Since you're a college student, I'm assuming that you do not have a lot of money to be going on extravagant excursions. There are a lot of free things to do when you are on vacation, such as, sight seeing, going to beaches, going fishing, hiking, etc.

5. Getting the most for your buck.

One thing that can add up very fast is transportation. I strongly suggest looking into finding the cheapest ways of transportation. See if you can rent a bike for the week, or if you can't rent a bike, walk. Try to limit your cost of train or bus tickets, and taxi fair. Although $10-15 does not seem like a lot of money, after six times of spending that, you have already added up $60-90. You want to spend your money on memories that you will cherish forever, not the thirty minutes you spent on a train.

6. How to eat for cheap.

When you first get to your vacation spot, go to the closest grocery store and buy breakfast foods, a loaf of bread, deli meat, snacks, and water. Limiting yourself to only going out to eat once everyday will save you anywhere from $100-150 by the end of the week. You can always switch up what meals you are going out to eat for, but having food in your hotel room will prevent you from spending unnecessary cash.

7. Enjoy yourself!

This by far is the most important step. Do not let yourself think about anything negative during your vacation. You are on this vacation to give yourself a break because you deserve it. You work hard as a college student, and you deserve to treat yourself every once and a while. You are only young once, so do what makes you happy!

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
