When you say the word "college," most people imagine Penn State, UCLA, or another one of the big schools with thousands upon thousands of students, a wealth of different majors, and clubs for every specialization or interest under the sun. However, when you go to college with less than 2,500 students life can be a little bit different. Here's a survival guide for the rest of us.
1. Don't talk about people behind their backs.
If the school is so small that even the teachers know who is dating who, being kind is especially important. The people you see on the walk to class or in the library are likely going to be the people you have to work within group projects and biology lab. And if you're mean or talk about people behind their backs, everyone will know in two seconds. Believe me, you'd much rather have your reputation be the girl that's too nice rather than the girl who's always cruel.
2. Go to your classes.
In a bigger school, you have the luxury of being a number on a registrar. While that might sound like a disadvantage (which it is in a lot of the cases) it's definitely a plus when it comes to skipping class. When you have 30 people in your English lecture, the professor is going to notice when you're not there. Plus, regularly attending class tells the professor that you care and you're invested in your education, which can result in an increased grade.
3. Don't compare your experiences.
College is about you, and your individual experience. Everything everyone goes through is unique and individual, and comparing your experiences is pointless and will lead to nothing but frustration. No, you won't meet 300 people in a day or have constant activities going on. however, your professors will know your name, and you'll be more connected to your community. Take it all in stride.
4. Get Involved.
Take the opportunities that present themselves to get involved in your campus! Even if you don't play a sport, there are no doubt tons of clubs and societies in your area that you'll find an interesting club. The more connected you are with your community, the more fun you'll have, and the happier you'll be!
