How To Survive Hell Week

All of us college kids have to. Good luck!

Chances are, you either just got out of said "Hell Week" or you're about to enter it. And chances are, you're only reading this because you haven't exactly prepared for the level of physical, mental, and emotional torment you're going to endure.

By the way, if you're not aware of what this great week is, it's the one week when all your professors choose to schedule their unit exams or papers or presentations or ridiculous work deadlines. This is slightly different from midterms week only in the sense that everyone suffers simultaneously during midterms week; HW, on the other hand, is the individual struggle that we go through technically at separate times, but also sometimes at the same time. (Sorry, that was super confusing).

For me, I take and Chemistry 2 + Lab, Biology 2 + Lab, Calculus 2, and Spanish. The test schedule for all of these classes looks too similar for my comfort. For the big three STEM classes, the tests in each line up so that when the week rolls around, I'm suffering non-stop for ten days.

Now trust me, I KNOW that these are good problems to have and I am privileged to have them. However, I am also a college student who copes by complaining.

So my Chemistry tests usually fall on the Friday of week 1 of HW. Even though it's at the end of a week, it just means I spend the four days before stressing. I get a tiny break for the weekend, but not really because my Calc 2 tests are on the Tuesday after Chemistry. And another tiny break before I struggle for Biology. I am grateful that they're not all on consecutive days, but it is still miserable.

So how do I survive HW? I'll share my top 7 coping mechanisms, but please feel free to add your own twists on these.

1) Melatonin

After the endless hours of cramming, I have a horrible habit of staying awake on my phone for thirty minutes before I fall asleep. Which would be ~fine~ if I didn't study until 2 am every HW. So yeah, get yourself some melatonin pills to force your brain to shut up and your eyes to close. Get enough sleep if you can.

2) Coffee/Diet Coke

This is sort of a new bad habit I've developed, but I don't think I'm addicted. I might have like three cans of Diet Coke a week, at most. It gets a bit much during HW, but I promise I'll work on it eventually. While melatonin helps my body shut down, I can't have that happening during cram time, so caffeine town is where I just reside for a good few days straight.

3) Sweatpants

This is kinda a lame coping mechanism, but I feel so much better about suffering when I don't have to put up a facade and look presentable to the public eye. Sweatpants usually lets those people close to me that I'm really going through it.

4) Chargers + Youtube Videos

The chargers thing is just common sense. Charge your things so you're not fighting to finish a paper at 7% on high brightness. There's a twofold help in Youtube Videos: 1) Cram videos for topic and 2) mental breaks. I don't know why but there are people out there that really enjoy making 20 minute videos on cellular respiration or electron models, so make good use of those. Also make use of videos simply to laugh. Take a break. Or a lot.

Chocolate

This isn't an "Eat your stress" tip, but just have something sweet laying around for a tiny reward after cram-reading thirty pages for a Biology exam. You're human. You're allowed to have chocolate.

A struggle buddy

This might not work for everyone, but it's really great when you have to struggle with a buddy. Just make sure they're not slowing you down by distracting you. Get a study partner and just while away the hours at the library. It goes by faster because you guys might take occasional gossip and laugh breaks. Worth it.

Water

This is on here because I forget to just drink water. It's like I forget I'm human and that I need moisture to survive. Please hydrate. Don't dry out and make your body suffer too.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
