When I look for things that will help my depression, very few helpful things ever pop up. When I look for apps, they are all things like depression trackers, meditation toys, and thinking positive quotes. When I go to social media, sites like Tumblr glorify mental health problems, and Reddit shows people encouraging unhealthy behaviors.
Everything I find seems to throw a lot of information at people, but nothing really useful when looking for short term help to ease it. I've found that the best way to find helpful things and not just the media selling you stuff is to ask friends and friends of friends for what works.
Here are some of the things that I've found one way or another in my 23 years.
Health
If you can't cook, order enough takeout to have leftovers for other meals.
If you can't change your clothes or shower, at least change your underwear and brush teeth.
Use a hairband to tie up greasy hair off of face, and baby wipe if you can't wash your face.
If you get dehydrated, but are too tired to get water, buy a big water bottle at the dollar store so you don't have to refill it for a while. I use bendy straws when I don't want to have to sit up.
Stress Relief Games and Apps
I've found that mindless games can help me relax and distract myself. However, games where your pets can die if you don't keep up with their care only makes me sadder, especially if I am trying to just take care of myself.
Do play:
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp
10 Billion Wives/20 Billion Wives
Terrarium
Mandala Coloring Book for Adults
Cthulhu Virtual Pet (will not die)
Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector (will not die)
Don't play:
Axolotl Pet (they will die)
Viridi (they will die)
IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE ENERGY TO PLAY GAMES
No energy to interact, hold controller, game, etc?
Go to Twitch or YouTube for 'Let's Plays', where players get mad over little things, there are games you won't get too invested in, and games with little stress. Go for something like multiplayer shooters where rounds end and restart a lot, so there is less time commitment and it is fast paced.
TV
Sometimes you are too exhausted for the shows you care about.
Solution: Reality TV
What reality TV makes you realize:
Life is meaningless and aimless and we just exist between moments (example: Keeping Up With the Kardashians).
You don't have to analyze quality and deeper meaning in shows. Just enjoy the small purposely made tension. It'll numb you to it all because you know there will be satisfaction in the end (example: The Bachelor).
Sometimes bad things happen and you can't control them, but at least we can laugh about some of them (example: Catfish).
There are concrete ways to help depression, such as medication and going to therapy. But sometimes, coping is all you can do. If that's the case, hopefully at least one of these ideas helps make it easier for you.
