For many, the world is in a state of flux today. Perhaps it always has been, but coinciding circumstances coupled with public outrage and action have dictated a new beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement. However, it didn't stop there: a new awareness has been developed for events all over the world, sparking a desire for reform all across the board. A subsequent surge in awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen (ongoing since 2016) after America's national cry against racial injustices towards the black community proves just that.
Still, there will always be initiatives that go unknown to others but are of importance to you. In that light, here are a few ways to make a difference in your own way, no matter what the cause is. It's important to note that activism takes on many forms so never undermine your methods with another's.
Have conversations with those willing to listen.
Not everyone will be in the mindset to talk about current events all the time - and that's absolutely okay. However, if you feel the need to share your views or feelings, even just a few messages to someone you trust can go a long way in making you feel more at ease.
Listen to podcasts.
This is something I am trying to get into myself. If you have the heart- and headspace for it, listen to relevant podcasts while you're doing mundane chores. A little at a time on a regular basis goes a long way. For a list of the most prevalent, click here.
Reach out to political persons.
Like peaceful protesting, reaching out to local representatives can hold policymakers and changers to be more accountable for events that happen under their jurisdiction. If you can, send emails to or call the appropriate parties explaining the need for change and a suggestion or two on how it can be put into effect.
Support socially-conscious businesses.
If you're able to, be a customer for businesses that champion your cause. A quick search can help you identify these online or in-person shops (plus it's a win-win for the consumer, the business, and the cause).
Donate in your own way.
Whether that's money, time, materials, or resources, it is ALL good. If you're donating money, websites like charitywatch.org can help in deciding where to donate. These websites grade nonprofits on how ethically they use their money so you can make more informed decisions about where your money goes.
Keep a balance.
This can all feel new and be easily overwhelming. Take time to step back, unplug, and enjoy the silence every single day. Tap into what makes you feel whole. This is a trek and not a burnout round, so treat it accordingly.
Sending courage and strength.
