How To Save The Bees

About five years ago, America and Canada's bee population started to decrease leaving bees to slowly die out, according to PBS. While scientists have spent money and time researching the problem of the disappearing bees, the most they have come up with are unknown viruses affecting the hives. For bee-keepers, your best bet is moving the queen bee into a new hive to make two hives out of one. Most of you reading this article probably aren't bee-keepers, so here are some everyday ways a normal non-beekeeper can do to help save the bees.

First, as non-beekeepers, you should know why bees are so important. Surprisingly enough, most of our food and drinks come from bees. Bees pollinate our fruits and vegetables, according to BBC iWonder. Bees serve as the perfect pollinator. Specifically, they have a pollen basket, also known as a corbicula. This transfers pollen back to the hive by compacting pollen on the outside of each of the bees' hind legs. Their continuous pollination contributes to the economy, in 2010 the bees produced $19 billion worth of agricultural crops in the U.S., according to One Green Planet.

If you have a garden, leave your weeds. Those weeds serve as a haven for pollinators like the bees. They have important resources for these bees. You can also plant bee-friendly flowers and herbs in your garden. Some include: gutter garden, flower box ladder, pallet garden, trellis, raised garden bed, and many more. You can read about the rest of the plants here.

For the non-gardeners, you can buy local and raw honey (and who doesn't love honey?). By buying honey, beekeepers learn the positive ways to take care of their bees. The raw honey means the hives weren't treated with harsh chemicals or pesticides, which could possibly be a reason for their unknown viruses in the hives. You can also buy local and organic foods from farmer's markets. They are also not using harmful chemicals or pesticides in their produce, thus helping out the environment in general.

There are more ways, which you can read more about here.

The bees are important to our environment and our health. While we don't know the main reasons for their disappearances and only have solid hypotheses, until then, we can all do our part to help save the bees.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
