7 Things You Need To Add To Your Daily Routine To Feel Happier
Theresa Carcaldi

We all like our daily routines, myself included. We rarely deviate from them because they work. But sometimes our routines become a bit too blasé. Wouldn't it be nice if we could both maintain our daily routines, but end the day feeling happier? Here are seven little things you need to add to your daily routine to feel happy throughout the day!

1. Wake up fifteen minutes earlier than you need to.

I know, I know--why sacrifice sleep? But hear me out: oftentimes, we sleep until the last possible minute (naturally so because we're exhausted), but that leaves us feeling rushed in the morning, which is never a good start to the day. To keep it stress-free, wake up fifteen minutes earlier to actually take a few minutes to shake off the grogginess and maybe even enjoy a fresh cup of coffee. When you start the day relaxed, that mood will carry with you throughout the day.

2. Wear bright colors.

Again, I know--me? Queen of wearing all black? Telling you to wear bright colors? But listen: wearing bright colors not only makes you happier, but it makes you feel confident. And what does confidence create? Happiness! It's a never-ending circle of happiness, so pick out your brightest shirt and sport it for the day. Plus, it's nearly springtime; let's brighten it up a bit!

3. Make the bed, even it's messy.

Just simply throwing the comforter back and placing the pillows at the head of the bed can lead to a more organized, less cluttered feeling in the room, which inevitably leads to a more organized, stress-free, and happy day!

4. Eat real meals.

There is nothing that will ruin your day more than being hangry. I know it's hard to find time to sit down and make a real meal or even grab something healthy, but snacking all day will 1) not fill your stomach long enough to function, and 2) will make you hangrier than you've ever been. Hanger leads to unhappiness, so take the extra fifteen or twenty minutes to make a sandwich or grab a salad--you'll thank yourself later.

5. Take a 30-minute break to do what makes you feel relaxed and happy.

Put the work down and pick up something you love. Whether it be journaling, reading, writing or Netflix, do what you need to in order to feel relaxed. You deserve the break!

6. Indulge in a sweet or salty treat after dinner.

I'm not saying to down an entire bag of chips or scarf a gallon of ice cream (although I'm totally not opposed to it and I certainly will not judge if you do), but go ahead and have a little treat after dinner. Instead of making yourself miserable by telling yourself you can't have it, have a little bit. Again, you deserve it! Plus, it'll satisfy your sweet/salty tooth and leave you happy.

7. Instead of scrolling through social media before bed, write down everything that made you happy that day.

Even if nothing monumental happened, write down anything that made you happy during the day. Whether you had delicious coffee or read a great chapter of your book, write it down. You'll go to bed happy, which means you'll wake up happy!

By adding these seven things to your daily routine, you can alter your mundane day in an easy way, leading to an overall happier day!

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
