Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. As a kid I would spend weeks planning what I wanted to be and my candy trades with my brothers were on a business expert level. Now that I'm in college, I see that Halloween is mostly used to wear a costume and get drunk. I love costumes, and if you're of legal drinking age, then by all means have fun! But for those of who can't or don't want to drink, and are too old to for trick-or-treating, what other Halloween activities are there? A lot actually!
1. Movies
Honestly, this is probably my favorite part of Halloween. "Hocus Pocus," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "Halloween" (Michael Myers), "Carrie," "The Omen," "The Skeleton Key," "Practical Magic," and let's not forget the best worst movie of all time, "Troll 2." Halloween-themed movies like "Hocus Pocus" are classics, and horror films are perfect for watching around this scary time of the year.
2. Food
When else is it appropriate to make Reeses and pretzels broomsticks or ghost Oreo truffles? Besides candy being everywhere (R.I.P. to my diet) there are so many fun, delicious Halloween themed recipes. Oh, and let's not forget about Pillsbury Halloween sugar cookies.
3. Fall Festivals
Whether you want to volunteer at one or attend one, fall festivals are so fun! It's a great way to get involved with your community and spread the Halloween spirit, and if you attend, there are lots of little games to play and things to do!
4. Pumpkin Crafts
You can make a classic jack-o-lantern, make a pretty display of pumpkins and fall plants, build a pumpkin man, carve art into your pumpkin, anything! And if you're like me and hate pumpkin guts, you can buy artistic styrofoam pumpkins to carve.
5. TV Specials
I don't know about y'all, but I loved the Halloween specials of shows. My favorite was always "Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktacular" on Cartoon Network. Partake in some nostalgia this Halloween and watch all the old kid's shows Halloween Specials. I also love to watch black and white episodes of "The Twilight Zone."6. Bonfires
This one might be more specific to the south, but this is the perfect time of year for bonfires and s'mores! And what better way to get in the Halloween spirit than to tell scary stories while you sit around a fire?
7. Haunted Houses
Personally, I hate haunted houses. But for those of you who are adventurous and like a good scare, there are tons of different haunted houses to visit during October! You can try intense ones like The Cutting Edge in Fort Worth, TX or low key ones that are less famous, or even interactive ones!8. Host a Costume Party
Host your own Halloween party for people who can't/don't drink and give away prizes for the best costume!Happy Halloween!
