If you have any social media accounts at all, you’ve probably heard about Pottery Barn’s new Harry Potter collection. I must say, I was pretty impressed with the quality and lack-of-cheesiness of the collection; most themed home decor tends to have 9th-grade superfan written all over it. Whether you’re a closeted Potter fan or simply don’t want your house to give guests the impression that you may be hiding a life-size Ron Weasley cutout in your closet, tastefully decorating your house with Harry Potter themed decor is easier than it might seem. Here are some of my personal picks that I think would be easiest to incorporate into your Muggle-fied dorm or apartment and make it a little more magical.
1. The Harry Potter Patronus Duvet Cover
Full disclaimer: I am obsessed with this duvet cover. The color is amazing and the print is whimsical without being too childish. Although it looks cozy and comfortable all by itself, try styling it with the magical velvet quilt and some white or champagne colored sheets!
2. The Elaborate Arched Mirror
It may be a little large and a little pricey for a dorm, but adding a decently sized mirror to a small apartment can work wonders in making the small space seem larger (trust me, I live in a shoebox, I would know). Bonus points if you copy Pottery Barn’s idea of adding little fairy lights around the border to give it an even more enchanted feel!
3. The Harry Potter Hedwig Jewelry Cage
Although a trained pet owl would be unbelievably cool, maybe try something a little more practical to make you feel like you have your own Hedwig: like her cage! It has holes to hang earrings in, hooks to keep necklaces from tangling and a small bowl at the bottom to house rings and bracelets. Compared to my system of hanging necklaces from tacks on my wall, it seems like Pottery Barn has put a little more thought into jewelry storage than I have.
4. The Vintage Chic Rug
This dreamy, seemingly vintage rug comes in a few sizes, one small enough for a dorm room and another large enough to stick under your coffee table, but it brings the same cozy, antique vibe to any room you put it in. Between this and your new arched mirror, your home will start looking like you stumbled on the cutest antique shop of all time.
5. Flameless Wax Candle
I know, why include candles in an article that’s supposed to be about home decorations? Hear me out though: they are glittery and flameless! Perfect for a no-candles-allowed dorm room or someone (like me) who sometimes forgets they ever lit a candle and might fall asleep for a nap with their favorite Bath & Body Works candle still burning. I suggest clustering a few of these on a cool, antique metal tray or different height candle holders beside the bottom corner of the Elaborate Arched Mirror so instead of only having the light of three candles in your room, you get the light of six!
Any Harry Potter fan, whether they are the proud owner of a Tumblr account with the URL Dracos-girlfriend-4ever or have only seen one or two movies, can find a way to incorporate this collection into their home. Hopefully with some of these ideas, your living space will start taking the shape of a Hogwarts dormitory that would even impress Snape!
