College has begun, and all of us freshmen have been thrown into this world of disjointed schedules and very little structure. Coming from a school where anything you could possibly need from a band-aid to a cot to lie on was just down the hall, I've felt the pull to be overly prepared for any situation. My backpack is one the Boy Scouts would be proud of.
A long running joke in my friendship circle is that we are all the "mom friend" meaning we are so prepared for any problem that could arise.
If your friend group lacks a mom friend, here's the basic starter pack to get you on your way.
1. Mini Emergency Kit
This one is most definitely a cheat, but it is infinitely helpful. They sell many different varieties of emergency kits all over. Most contain simple things such as bandages, wet wipes, antiseptic cream, hair ties, bobby pins, mints, clear nail polish, and safety pins. They come in all different colors, but the best part is the minimal amount of space they take up, most being no bigger than a small wallet.
2. Raincoat/Umbrella
Specifically in south Louisiana, rain gear is a must, and the only thing better than a good raincoat is a portable raincoat. This is something that you will never regret having and will most definitely put it to good use.
3. Extra Pens and Pencils
You never know when there will be a massive shortage of writing utensils or worse when that favorite pen of yours will run out of ink. I think years of being terrified that my only pencil would break in the middle of an ACT has scared me into always having extras.
4. Phone Charger
If you are anything like me, you spend most of your battery on Google Maps (trying so desperately not to be lost on campus) or maybe you're a serious Pokemon trainer. Either way your phone will die eventually, and it is better to be 100% ready with a charger when you are out and about.
5. Sweater
Even though September weather is simply an extension of August heat down south, most days I carry a sweater or hoodie with me to every class. On the rare occasion that it is cold in class, it's so nice to have something soft and warm to thrown on.
6. Snacks
I believe the real test of being a mom friend is determined by having snacks handy. Whether you always have a bag of almonds or a granola bar with you, having a quick snack available could be your saving grace. If you're hungry before a three hour lab or you have a hungry friend, accessible snacks will undoubtedly save the day.
