In the past, I've written about how in America, we now live in a presidency where no one is safe. The rights of LGBTQ, minorities, and immigrants are being stripped and played around with by a ignorant, racist man. He hasn't even been in office a whole year and it feels like the
However, there is one redeeming quality about the time we live in, that has to do with the people of this country, not the unfortunate president: when tragedy strikes, there is endless support.
From the Vegas shooting to the Southern California wildfires, there has been endless support and donations to those whose lives have been turned upside down. In Ventura County, the fire is only 5% contained and more than 450 homes and buildings have been burned, including downtown Ventura.
Since the start of this fire, instantly people went into action to raise money, gather donations, and find compassionate people to help. This warms my heart to know that there are still good people in the world, especially people who are willing to be there for complete strangers. The fires that are happening are not man-made, like the Vegas shooting, but similar to previous shootings, the effects will last a lifetime. I know of people who have lost their homes in the Southern California Wildfires. Unfortunately, more and more fires keep popping up.
The firefighters are brave and bold for doing everything they can to stop these fires. So are the people who are bold enough and compassionate enough to donate money, clothes, and other necessary means to those who have lost everything.
I challenge you to be bold and compassionate enough to donate to those whose lives have been changed. We live in a world where if the problem isn’t close enough for us to see it, we pretend it isn’t there. Well, I’m asking you to change that and to work on changing it because I have a tendency as well, to pretend that the things happening in the world don’t affect me by saying “yes, that is sad,” say a little prayer, and be done.
But WE can make the difference. We can be a country who supports people and makes them feel safe in a country that isn’t completely safe anymore because the impulsive president. We can carry on the endless support for when tragedy strikes, but more importantly, we can become citizens who offer endless support even when tragedy isn’t on the horizon.
