Let me ask you, the reader, a question; what were you thinking about last time you were watching a movie or TV show? Were you thinking of all the things you need to do in the next couple of weeks? How about the horrible violence happening around the world? If you’re like me then you were too busy focusing on the plot to even think about what’s going on. To me that’s the true beauty of Movies and Television, the fact they offer an escape.
I firmly believe that the most important thing you can offer someone is an escape, even if it is just for a few minutes. Granted there are millions of other types of escapes, such as video games, books, and music. I could keep going on and on about the various different mediums you can use to forget about your problems. However in my eyes, there is no better escape than to watch a movie or television series. This is because when writers do their job right they provide you with characters you either identify with or grow an attachment to.
When they have the characters all they need to seal the deal is a good plot line. Contrary to what you may think though, not all movies that provide an escape have to be happy. I would even go far enough to say a movie provides a better escape when it isn’t all happy but instead has happy moments. This is because it resembles the real world.
Viewers are willing to accept most anything when it comes to movies and shows, like a teacher becoming a meth lord, or a little girl saving a small town in Indiana, as long as it isn’t too fake. This is because of we know that even though monsters and powers aren’t real, if they were real and a situation like Stranger Things happened in the real world that it could play out like that.
All it takes is a good plot and some decent character to convince someone to leave behind all of their problems and to worry about the characters and their problems instead. If you don’t believe me, next time you are stressed out but need to relax and just forget about your problems, just put something good on TV and within an hour you’ll forget about everything and you’ll be focused on what’s happening.
