It is without a doubt scary to go live in an entirely different environment for the next four years of your life from where you grew up. It can be hundreds and hundreds of miles away. This is why it is crucial to find the perfect roommate. You need to be comfortable and happy with the person whom you will be literally living with for your freshman year, and perhaps the next three years of college.
I am fortunate enough to say that I got remarkably lucky with my roommate choice, and even more delighted to say that I will be living with her in our apartment for sophomore, junior, and senior year. You might ask how I got this lucky, or what are the secrets to finding the perfect roommate? Well, there really isn't one singular answer, but many. You will have a myriad of choices coming into college, however, you need to keep your mind and options open. I discovered my roommate through connections with another good friend of mine. This way, she told me how similar we were and if we would get along or not.
Thankfully, she told me that "we are the exact same person." Thrilled to hear this, I reached out to her. After we both got into the University of Delaware, we started chatting and decided to become freshman roommates. After spending my first two semesters at Delaware with her, I knew I would not be able to tolerate anyone else as my roommate. See, the secret is you need to find someone who you are similar to, can vent your problems to, discuss work, and most importantly respect each other's space. As much time that we do like spending with each other, we are both hard workers and give each other much needed personal space.
Since we are so similar to one another, we know how much we value and respect each other's space when needed. If this is of necessity, for instance, we will sit in different rooms or go to sleep early. These are social signals that we picked up during our freshman year. Freshmen, you will eventually learn and understand the space that your roommate needs. It's not a bad thing, it's just simply natural to want alone time. Thus, if you understand all of this in its entirety, you and your roommate will enjoy one another's company and avoid all unnecessary drama.
On that note, good luck incoming freshman with finding your perfect match. Also, good luck current freshman with your roommates now and in the future. If you want to have an awesome time during the best four years of your life, having the ideal roommate is crucial. Now, you all know what to do and I promise, from experience, everything will be more than okay.
