How Nature Will Heal You
Dr.Odd

Though we may incognitive to the small aspects of life, nature poses a great positive impact on the world around us. We are constantly consumed by the thoughts that are lives are terrible, and that stress in itself is deteriorating us by the minute. However, the simplest application of nature in our lives is the first step in fulfilling a more prosperous, beautiful life. A psychology study conducted by Grinde and Patel in 2009 clearly showed a link between increased levels of nature and “positively valued changes in cognition and emotion”, which resulting in better “health and well being”. The less stress we have in our life translates to a more headstrong, steady, and concentrated life. We accomplish more when we are able to concentrate on tasks in a more relaxed mood. Therefore, nature heals. And we as a society, should rely on it to bring us an incredible amount of happiness in a time where pressure consumes us.

Whether you are from Florida or not, nature can be present in a multitude of mediums. The most relevant version of nature that is most easiest to find is the presence of grassy or tree related areas in your college campus. Nancy Wells, professor at Cornell University, states that “trees and natural areas may bolster a sense of community” through first “drawing people together” and finally bolstering “social connections”. Thereby, it is imperative to be one with the aspect of being around trees and grass areas. Thus, studying outside or completing homework on top of a multitude of grass is imperative in fabricating a healthier life. First, you are able to be a lot calmer psychologically by resting in the arms of nature. Second, it may be a random occurrence with a stranger in the midst of nature, that sparks a friendship of a lifetime. Therefore, rely on nature-always.

Moreover, there are other ways to be exposed to nature. Engaging in a variety of nature walks and trails can be both relaxing and relieving, thus bringing a sense of serenity to the mind. Trails can be either uphill, downhill, or flat hilled. Regardless, putting a pair of earbuds in your ear and listening to music whilst taking a walk down a trail can be one of the most peaceful ventures in the entire world.

For those living in the depths of Florida, rely on the power of natural springs. These springs are including but not limited to: Rock Springs, Deleon Springs, Wekiwa Springs, Rainbow Springs, Blue Springs, and more. These all natural springs bring absolute serenity in the form of all natural, flowing water that is meant to be refreshing in a rather, cold way. The temperature of the water of the springs are usually below 60 degrees, but do not fret-these springs will quite literally freeze the stress off of you!

On a more defined perspective, sometimes there may not be enough time in the day to go to nature. Therefore, there is a way to bring nature to us. Stephen Kaplan, psychology professor at the University of Michigan states that you need to create an environment where the “attention is automatic”, and that the environment brings a strong sense of “fascination” to the human mind. Small plants, cacti, or fruit related plants can be placed on the desks of any student or employee. These small changes convert the minds of individuals to a lot happier, stress free moods. In addition, it makes people want to work harder, more efficiently, and for a longer period of time knowing that they are in a more comforting environment.

All in all, nature is one of the most healing forces the world has to offer. So take advantage of it- immerse your world in a world that has a lot less stress, and a lot more sense of community. Indulge in a forest adventure, a dip in the springs, or an afternoon admiring the plant sitting on your desk. The smallest changes to the environment invoke immense positive impacts.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
