When I was younger a big portion of my life would be found in between places. I was constantly living on the wayside. Babbling happily to my grandmother as we rode a Philadelphia subway, sleeping on board a Florida--bound train and riding planes to and from countries abroad. I always hated being in the middle ground. I liked the travel-the anticipation of flight--it was intoxicating, but the takeoff was always jarring. There’s a moment where you’re not sure if you are in the sky yet or still making the leap into the atmosphere. You don’t yet know your place in your new environment yet.I imagine that this is what college is like. The unfolding of bed sheets and the making of new friends doesn’t make a place home. Learning the names of the neighbors and the quirks of a building can’t make sleeping at night any easier. For a while, I’m sure I’ll be bumbling in the dark. Yet my career as a childhood wanderer has provided me with tell tale signs to know if a place is truly home.
