Wichita: The WBS HorrorFest Will Be A Scary Great Time

My favorite genre in all of film is definitely horror. I absolutely love how a horror movie, regardless of it's quality, can still be enjoyable. Some of the worst horror films ever made can give you quite a laugh that leaves you satisfied by the end.

Then, there are the classics.

We're talking "Evil Dead." We're talking "Hellraiser." We're talking "The Hills Have Eyes." We're also talking about one of my personal favorites "Dawn of the Dead."

Now, I myself particularly enjoy watching old films in the theater, as it gives an experience of a film that you don't get just popping a DVD into your Xbox. Sitting in the seats with popcorn in my hand in a dark theater takes me back to whenever that specific film was made. It's like time was turned all the way back.

In Wichita, there is a tradition at the Old Town Warren called the "HorrorFest." During this event, classic horror films such as "Jaws," "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and even "Monster Squad" have been shown, and it's without a doubt my favorite event of the fall. There's no better feeling for a horror, or movie fan in general, than filing into a theater with other fans of the genre and just watching a classic on the big screen . This year's lineup of films is, in my opinion, the best ever. So, if you're in Wichita, or are willing to make the drive, make sure to check out these films each week:

Oct 1st & 2nd: Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn

After the success Sam Raimi and Bruce Campell had with the original "Evil Dead," the sequel amps up the hilarity without subtracting any of the scares. It's like if Tom & Jerry met horror.

Oct 8th & 9th: Hellraiser and Hellraiser 2 Double Feature

This is the film I'm most excited for. When Hellraiser was release it changed the horror genre forever. In the middle of the slasher-ridden 1987, one film dared to be different and create scares a different way: extraterrestrial travelers that show others the greatest suffering in the universe. Crazy right?

Oct 15th & 16th: Re-Animator

Are you a fan of H.P Lovecraft? If so, this is one to check out! Based on Lovecraft's original story, a bright young scientist becomes involved with bringing back the dead. Sci-fi horror fans rejoice.

Oct 22nd: The Hills Have Eyes

Another film in this lineup that I am particular excited for, "The Hills Have Eyes" exercises the fear of the weird and preying on the innocent. This was one of the first horror films I ever watched when I was introduced to the genre, and I'm happy about that because it definitely laid the groundwork for future films similar to it.

Oct 23rd: The Changeling and C.H.U.D Double Feature

An excellent combination of horror films, "The Changeling" is more of a thriller, mystery horror while "C.H.U.D" errs on the side of Sci-Fi. One of the creepy things about "The Changeling" is that writer Russell Hunter alleges that the creepy story of a haunted mansion actually happened.

Oct 29th and 30th: Dawn of the Dead 3D

This one is the headliner. George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" is one of the best zombie flicks to ever be created, and capitalizes on everything the original "Night of the Living Dead" did right. One of my favorite video games as a kid was "Dead Rising" where you take on zombies locked in a shopping mall, so when I learned there was a film that used the same premise, I was super excited. If you'll see any of these films, see this one.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
