Hopes I Have for my Little After I Graduate

Things I wish my Big had hoped for me

Hopes I Have for my Little After I Graduate
Allison de Haas

My Little is one of my best friends. I don’t watch "Grey’s Anatomy," but from what I can gather, my Little is probably my person. Being a Big is not always just crafts and photoshoots, sometimes it is really difficult. You learn to put someone else’s needs and wants before your own during your twenties, one the most selfish times in your life. You learn how to best support your Little and comfort her when times are rough. My whole branch of my family graduated or did not come back to my college the semester after I joined, so I really found my sorority family in my Little. I found that your soulmate isn’t always the man of your dreams but your best friend.

Now, I am not graduating this semester, as I am only a Junior, but with this batch of seniors leaving and my final year looming, I really thought about what I would hope for my Little for her year at college without me. I know what it is like to be a Little without a Big on campus, and it can be difficult. I think this knowledge really fuels these wishes. This is what I would have wanted someone to tell me two years ago.

  1. I hope you find the right people. I hope you meet the kind of people that will appreciate you and know just how wonderful you truly are. People who understand the beauty of your groufits (all grey outfits) and sense of humor.
  2. If you don’t meet those types of people, if you only meet people who will use you, I hope you know when and how to walk away.
  3. I hope you know I am still always here for you. I might be a hundred miles away, but call me, beep me, if you want to reach me because I’m here for you--as much as you might be sick of me by now.
  4. I hope you get a single because I’m going to visit as much as possible, and your roommate might get mad.
  5. I hope you learn to find some comfort in being Psuedo on your own. That your spine uncurls a little more, and your feet plant a little more solidly.
  6. I hope you keep me up-to-date on all the gossip and goings-on. (This isn’t really an option for you. You have to.)
  7. I hope the cafeteria has as many mozz sticks and corndogs as your heart desires.
  8. I hope you know that you are always valid. Your feelings are valid just because you feel them.
  9. I hope you grow as close to your Little as I have to you, and that you learn to be a better Big than I have been from my shortcomings, like I did from mine.
  10. I hope our sorority continues to help you reach your potential and let you grow.
  11. I hope you have as many wild nights as possible. Soak it up, babe, because you will not always have this type of freedom.
  12. I hope you find a spot on campus that is yours, like the graduation steps are for me, a place where you can look out and just be filled with sunshine.
  13. You better I hope you continue stealing koozies and reign supreme.
  14. I hope you find a way to be unapologetically you because you are one-of-a-freaking-kind. Find your voice and use it without restriction.
  15. I hope your favorite fraternity always "finds" more alcohol.
  16. Above all, I hope you always know that you are loved, and there is no one that can take that away from you.

I know it's a year early, but thank you, Danielle, for always accepting me the way I am. Let's raise hell this one last year!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
