I'm Hopeful For The New Decade

I hope that the 20s are better for me.

This is something that I wrote for Facebook as a new year post, but I think that it translates well as an Odyssey article as well.

To put it very bluntly, this decade really sucked for me. I experienced so much hardship, adversity, heartbreak, and loss; probably way more than anyone my age should have by this point in their life. I struggled fiercely (and still do) with my confidence, mental health, and self-worth. I lost my way before I even began to figure out who I actually am, and that's a really scary place to be in having recently entered my twenties.

Despite the terribleness of these years, I did fight some light in the dark, thanks to my discovery of theatre. While I loved to sing and dance in the comfort of my own room, ten years ago, the thought of getting up on stage would have bought me to tears.

Through theatre, I learned how to talk to people (something I could not do for the life of me 10 years ago), work collaboratively, and be a decent person, among many other lessons. I found friends and many other people that I care for deeply, places that I can call home, and a chosen family that I'll have for the rest of my life. I accomplished more than I ever thought possible.

Theatre is also something that will form my next decade, as I am almost halfway through my undergraduate studies to become a theatre teacher. I wouldn't be doing this if it weren't for all the people I've crossed paths with along the way and the people that have inspired me the most.

I hope that the 20s are better for me. I hope that they bring more opportunities and more artistic fulfillment than I can even imagine. I hope they bring me joy, success, and love. I hope they bring me a family to call my own.

But most importantly, I hope they bring self-care and self-love. I hope that I will learn how to take better care of myself and my mental health. I hope that I will learn how to prioritize my own needs. I hope that I will fully learn that it is okay to ask for help when I need it. And lastly, I hope to begin to discover who I am and what it means to be me and to love myself for it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
