Moving to a new place can be scary, and moving by yourself for the first time as an adult can be even scarier. Nevertheless, your life doesn't have to be miserable. Make the most out of your time abroad and battle homesickness like a pro.
1. Get out of bed.

When you're missing home, it's really easy to stay in bed, turn the TV on, and be miserable all day. But if you really want to get rid of your homesickness, simply getting out of bed and taking a shower can make a huge difference in your day. You might not want to do anything else that day, and that's perfectly fine, just make sure to get some fresh air as well.
2. Dress nicely.

When you're dressed to impress, your mind tends to feel better. Now that you've showered, try to think about an outfit that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and cool, and put it on. It could be a nice dress, or a cute pair of shorts, even a special accessory. The point is to pretend that you're calm and collected, even if you don't feel that way just yet.
3. Call a friend and make plans.

You probably know someone who's in the exact same situation as you, and if you don't, I'm sure you at least know someone who lives near you. Try calling them to see what they're up to, and you just might come up with plans for later in the day, or later in the week.
4. Be a tourist.

There's a reason why tourism is so important in today's world. Go out and be a tourist in your area, and do everything the locals avoid doing. Fall in love with your surroundings, go have a pastry at the most luxurious bakery downtown and take as many pictures as possible. It's important for you to see this town or city in a different light every once in a while because it will help you remember why you moved there in the first place.
5. Skype with your loved ones.

Setting up regular Skype sessions with your family, friends and significant other is very important if you want to avoid homesickness. Talking to each other about your day is a simple way to stay connected and feel like you aren't really missing out on anything back home.
6. Stay connected through texts.

Skype is an amazing tool for communicating with people, but it's practically impossible to use it for more than one or two hours per day. It's crucial for you to text your loved ones, because this way you'll feel as if they're right at your fingertips whenever you're feeling lonely or sad, or whenever you just need someone to talk to.
7. Let yourself cry.

Sometimes you really don't feel like doing anything, and that's totally okay. It's also very important to listen to your feelings and let yourself curl up in a ball and cry your eyes out every once in a while.
Being away from home isn't easy for anyone, no matter how old you are or how much fun you might be having. Don't ever feel like there's a timeline for your emotions, because that couldn't be farther from the truth. It's a process, and it usually takes some time for people to settle into a new routine. Just remember that all things in life are temporary, so make the most out of your time abroad. You'll be back home before you know it.
