If You're Homesick Already, These Dozen Things Can Soften The Blow Of Being Away At College
Brooke Catahan Smith

With it being my third year at Virginia Tech, I know the feeling of being homesick especially since my hometown is a long five hours away from Blacksburg. I was shocked when I moved from my beach landscape to a small town full of mountains. Fortunately, I've learned how to combat that feeling of missing home by sticking to these 12 remedies that will rid away any homesickness.

Listen to some good musicĀ

Some feel-good tunes will drown out that homesick sadness.

Join some clubs

Gobblerfest is a great way to start getting into them and it's a great way to meet more people!

Hangout with your new friends

College is all about making memories and maybe your friends feel homesick too.

Eat some good food

We have some of the best dining food in the country that will help you forget all about homecooked meals.

Practice mindfulness

Take up yoga or deep breathing exercises or even journaling to really find peace and zen.

Find some place that's hiring

With a job, you'll have something to consume your time and an extra inflow of cash

Hit the gym

Working out will release those feel good hormones and get you in shape.

Take up a new hobby

Maybe you'll find something to collect or find something you're good at ā€” anything that can help you take your mind off of being away from home.

Read a good book

When I'm feeling down, I like to relax and unwind with a good read. It lets you escape and leave all your worries behind for a little while.

Join an intramural sport

They have everything from battleship to basketball. There is literally something for everyone.

Call or text your family to stay in touch

Great news, with the age of technology, distance is a thing of the past! Just remember that you don't need to call them every single waking minute.

Make the most out of your time in college

Really enjoy these next four years of your life and don't harp on things that you've left behind.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
