Homecoming: We Love It And Hate It

Homecoming can be one of the best times of the year. It is a time when people show as much school spirit as possible, parties are happening across campus and it is a week of going all out. However, while we as students love all this, we also get annoyed with the whole week.

One of the best reasons to love Homecoming week is that you can come together with people around you and get spirited up. The football games on Saturday are filled with enthused college students, kids wearing their favorite player's number and the whole community out to support the team. It is a time when the crazy fans paint up spelling out the name of their team and losing their voices with excitement. When your school is a as bad as the Vandals it doesn't even matter because the atmosphere is unbelievable.

The Homecoming activities for Greeks brings out the fun, competitive side of everyone. During this week it seems like there is nothing more important than winning Homecoming to show you are the best fraternity and sorority group on campus -- until everyone forgets a week later. Every person wants every activity to be perfect and spends more time on them than they probably should. The floats become glorified works that you are so proud of because you have spent hours on and no matter what, they will never be as good as you want. Within all this comes the bonding that houses gain with each other, making the week even more special.

Lastly is the parade. The parade is the best time of all, showing off your theme to the community and your bad ass float you spent forever on. The kids look up to you as you throw out candy. That five mph ride feels glorious and you know the hard work has paid off.

With all this being said, homecoming can also be annoying. At first, everyone is excited as can be to get everything done and be the best on campus. However, there is so much work that is needed to participate in the week's activities. At first it sounds like a good idea to go all out. Honestly, it is exhausting. You forget that you have school and homework too. That is already in the way of relaxing and doing nothing; now we have more obligations for the week.

Once you realize that you thought homecoming was a lot cooler than it actually is, you pretty much say screw it and procrastinate until the very end. That awesome float you made in the third paragraph was actually done the night before when you realized you actually have to do it. All the house decorations are easily done at last minute with regretful thoughts. After you are done with all this there is a moment when you can step back and realize how great you are at getting it all done as quickly as possible.

Don't forget about the actual parade. At my school the parade starts early in the morning where the band and trucks wake everyone up. Since everyone is going 5 m.p.h, the trucks are constantly honking their horns to raise excitement and a confetti cannon is bound to go off. This is the final lesson when you realize the fantastic week of Homecoming can also be the most annoying week too.

When all is said and done, Homecoming is a lot of fun, looking back on it. However, during the process every time you are working on part of an activity you are thinking, I could be doing anything else. Happy Homecoming, everyone!!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
