In this era of Pitch Perfect and Pentatonix, there has been a clear rise in the popularity of A Cappella as a form of artistry both for people who are consumers and for people who are producers. While founded in a vast history of religious institutions, only to be introduced secularly in the United States in the 1900s through collegiate academic institutions, modern A Cappella is a Dadaist abstraction of music writ large.
From Barbershop to doo-wop to boybands and pop a cappella of the 2000s, American culture is no stranger to the array of musical talent that comes out of famed a cappella groups. Rockapella, Take 6, and Accapella are all iconic names from the '90s and '00s and are joined today twenty years later by names like Pentatonix, Noteworthy, and Exit 245. But a group that has been around amidst this time despite everyone else's rises and falls is Home Free. While their current incarnation isn't what they've always been, their sound has always been unique.
Finding their niche in 2013 on NBC's The Sing-Off, Home Free has seen the most success they have ever seen in the last four years. But you're probably bewildered at this statement. "I've never even heard of them and I love a cappella music," you're probably saying to yourself. Well, no worries! There is a very reasonable answer to why you probably haven't heard them yet: they sing COUNTRY a cappella music!
In their most recent album--released on September 22nd, 2017--Timeless, the men bring their listeners a 14-track 48-minute album displaying just how many talents they all have. From Rob Lundquist and Adam Chance's beautifully tenor vocals, to Tim Foust's bone-shaking bass notes, there is no sound this quartet can't make.
Notable tracks on the album include fantastic covers of songs we all know, "Castle" on the Hill by Ed Sheeran and "Life is a Highway" by Rascal Flatts (originally Tom Cochrane); covers of songs that might just be better than the original, "In the Blood" by John Mayer, and "Mayday" by Cam; and expertly written covers that will make you love country music, "Timeless" and "When You Walk in."
Home Free is currently on their "A Country Christmas" Tour , finishing up the last few stops just before New Year's Eve. Good news though! They are starting back up on their "TIMELESS" Tour on March 01, 2018, with dates until the middle of June scattered all across the country. So listen to a few songs, buy your tickets, and enjoy!
